The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus

Dr. Faustus is a story about an intelligent and well studied man who sells his soul to the devil in order to gain more power. After learning that the underworld is not all he expected it to be, Faustus tries to repent to God but fails and is sent to Hell for eternity.

Theme

Main Theme

The main theme of Dr. Faustus is the idea that Faustus sold his soul to the devil in exchange for (what he thought was) power

Different Adaptations

  • The Little Mermaid
  • O Brother Where art Thou
  • The Simpsons

Adaptations

The Little Mermaid (1989)

Ariel trades her voice for legs to Ursula so she can walk on land and meet Prince Eric but she realizes without a voice she can't speak to him

The Little Mermaid

She is forced to make a choice, give up her voice and family or to find 'love'

Like Faustus, Ariel thinks legs will solve all of her problems

What's Different: a happily ever after, Ariel is able to say she was sorry

O Brother Where Art Thou (2000)

Character Tommy Johnson sells his soul for the ability to play the guitar 'real good'

O Brother Where art Thou

Tommy sells something as valuable as his soul for something so trivial as the ability to play guitar

At the end of the movie the men are able to repent when they are about to be killed they ask for forgiveness and help and a flood washes over them

The Simpsons (1993): The Treehouse of Horror IV

In a Halloween episode, Homer sells his soul to his neighbor for a donut

The Simpsons

Also goes to Hell in the end because he can't fulfill his promise

Makes a satire out of Faustus

Homer and Faustus express the same greed for shallow things: donuts and power
