Diseases in WW1

Summary

There were many diseases in WW1 some very preventible ones were Trench diseases, STIs and the Flu pandemic which happened during this time. The treatments could be very diverse such as injecting toxic substances to cure, but most of the time it was just waiting for the illnesses to heal on there own.

Trench Sickness

World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted

Trench Sicknesses

Many sicknesses sprung up in the trenches that weren't know before. Because of this these sicknesses were named after the trenches.

Trench Foot

  • Caused by prolonged exposure to wet and unsanitary conditions
  • Feet would become numb, red and swollen
  • In left untreated would cause gangrene

Trench Fever

  • Illness caused by common lice
  • Caused headaches, fever and had relapsing bouts
  • Never Fatal

Treatment

  • Not much could be done
  • Soldiers partnered to be in charge of others feet
  • Had to de-lice using insecticides

STIs

STIs were very prevalent in the war, with many soldiers suffering form their affects. There were major discovery in STIs before the war and soldiers were encouraged to practice abstinence.

Preventatives

  • Encouraged to practice abstinence
  • Army issued an policy
  • Anyone who failed to get treatment/ got the disease would be trialed and imprisoned.

Treatment

  • Treatment could consist of:
  • Mercury injections
  • Local antiseptics
  • 606 – arsphenamine
  • Mostly just waiting to heal

Flu Pandemic

  • Began during the end of the war (1918-1920)
  • 500 million people infected, 50-100 million deaths
  • Killed 30,000 in US army out of 52,000 non-combat deaths
  • Could be cause by war
  • Mutated strain of less lethal Flu virus
  • Conditions made it easier to get and made it more lethal

Treatment

  • Not much could be done
  • Barely knew about Viruses
  • Could only try to Support patient
  • Quarantine
