5.3 PROTEIN SYNTHESIS :
TRANSCRIPTION
Learning Outcome
1
- Overview of the relationship between DNA and Protein Synthesis
- Explain transcription which involves RNA polymerase to form mRNA
Protein Synthesis
2
- Protein synthesis is a process by which living cells synthesize protein
- Consists amino acids sequence according to genetic information carried in DNA and RNA
Diagram
1) Synthesis of mRNA in the nucleus
2) Movement of mRNA into cytoplasm via nuclear pore.
3) Synthesis of protein.
TRANSCRIPTION
- RNA polymerase binds to promoter (at TATA box) and then unwind the DNA strands.
- RNA polymerase initiates mRNA synthesis by adding RNA neucleotides that complementary to the template strand (DNA)
- A process by which genetic information on DNA is transcribed to form mRNA
- Occur in nucleus.
3
- RNA polymerase moves downstream, unwinding the DNA and elongating RNA transcript from 5' - 3' by adding nucleotides to the 3' end of growing polynucleotides
- RNA polymerase moves downstream, unwiding the DNA and elongating RNA transcript from 5' - 3' by adding nucleotides to the 3' end of growing polynucleotide
Transciption terminates when RNA polymerase reaches 'stop signal' at terminantion site.
mRNA is released and the RNA polymerase detach from DNA
