Every time you go to a web-page there is an "auction" in the background that decided what ads were shown to you and the advertiser sets a maximum they will pay for the ad space.

I found an article that showed evidence of girls receiving fewer stem ads than boys, the main reason that girls are more expensive to advertise to.

If search engines are meant to be a safe harbor of unbiased information, then this is a clear conflict of interests.
But these search engines are private companies and they might have goals that are not purely altruistic in their intentions.

Our data are always simultaneously being tracked whenever our hand-held technologies are turned on.
Little did we know that there are companies out there who have placed tiny software into our phones, including apps that allows them to quietly collect data about you.
Our lives is practically an open book in the technology world. These people can track where we go virtually and view our daily schedules of our daily lives.
Although, having our data being tracked and collected invades our privacy, sometimes it is also necessary because this prevents major problems from happening.
However, there should be a certain degree where data collection should stop because not everything should be collected about our lives.
Though National Security is an important aspect, every individual should always have their privacy as mentioned in the amendments.
Online ads are becoming increasingly targeted and persistent. Tracking technologies like web cookies are collecting information about our browsing activities from site to site.
Ad companies who have trackers can tell if you are interested in buying something. They look for signals — like if you closed the browser after looking at the something for awhile or left the item in the site’s shopping cart without completing the purchase. From there, the ad tech companies can follow your cookie through trackers and ad networks on various sites and apps to serve you an ad for the item. It is all part of a marketing scheme that companies hire marketing agents to do.
Internet Algorithms use our data to attempt to give relevant information that is tailored to us.
While this can make our lives easier and our results helpful, their may be bias in the information we are being presented.
Many people believe these systems are neutral, but those who create the algorithms need to insure they do not program in bias.
A lot of these problems do not have clear cut solutions, but the first step to solving problems is identifying them and raising awareness. With this knowledge we can move forward to try and eliminate these biases from the technology we are increasingly reliant on.
