Story

Mark 2:11-12

Jesus tells the paralytic to stand and walk, so he does.

Mark 2:1

Jesus comes into a town and starts teaching in a home. So many show up there is no room in the house.

Mark 2:2-4

Four men carry a paralytic to see Jesus, but can't reach him, so they tear the roof off to lower the man to Jesus.

Mark 2:6-10

The scribes there think Jesus is blaspheming God. Jesus reads their minds and reprimands them

Mark 2:5

Jesus forgives the paralytic of his sins.

Scribes

What is a scribe?

Scribes

Men who copied the Old Law

Very likely, devout Jews

The best we can do is speculate

Attitude

Why were they there?

I would assume they were looking for an argument

  • Jesus was teaching in a house

Attitude

  • Word of His teaching had to have reached them

They wanted to shame Jesus and make Him look unintelligent

  • They knew they would not agree, but they went anyway

The Bible is full of examples of what to do, and not to do

Faith

Give credit where credit is due

These men had great faith

Faith

What was their faith placed in?

Not God or His Word

Obviously, not Jesus

Themselves and their interpretation of God's Word

Paralytic

Paralytic

Dependency

He was completely dependent upon his friends

Dependency

It is impossible to have pride when you are entirely dependent on others

We are Spiritually paralyzed

Action

Once Simple Action

Mark 2:12

12 Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all...

Action

Mark 2:11

11 “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”

Friends

Were they friends?

Friends

They could have been guys who decided to do the right thing

Faith

Their faith was not in themselves.

1 Corinthians 3:6

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.

Faith

Their faith was in the idea that if they got this guy to the feet of Jesus, he would be okay

This should be our faith as well

Work

What all did these men do?

  • Carried a grown man
  • Got him onto the roof

Work

  • Took apart the roof
  • Lowered a grown man to the ground

Attitude

They played a background role

They didn't meet Jesus

They still did the right thing

They didn't get thanked

Attitude

They worked the hardest

The Church needs rope holders

And are mostly forgotten
