Nouns and articles

Use and non -use of articles

  • we use a/an with something general or non-specific.
  • Refer to someone's job or function.

the indefinite article

  • when we refer something for the first time.
  • Refer to a singular thing.

For example:

  • Can I borrow a pen? (= any pen)

  • My dad is a lawyer

article -a

for example:

  • My grandma eats an apple for breakfast.

  • I bought an umbrella for those rainy days.

article - an

We use the:

1.with singular nouns: something specific, mention before or may be only one of it.

2. with plural countable nouns to refer to something known, specific or mention before.

3. With superlative and other similar adjectives.

4. Comparative structures.

5. with some countries, rivers, seas and oceans, island groups, mountain ranges and deserts.

the definite article

For example:

The university is holding the seminar next Wednesday.
