Supermarket

By Bobby Hall

Plot

Supermarket has two parts.

Supermarket is about an author named Flynn, who is writing a story about a supermarket.

Plot

At the beginning of the book, Flynn needs to prove to himself that he can actually finish a book, so he does whatever he can to find writing influence, so he gets a job at the local supermarket

Part 1

Part 1

Part 1 is about a depressed author trying to find inspiration for his first published book about a normal guy who works in a supermarket. Part 1 ends with Flynn realizing that he has been the made up character in his book all along. Flynn's character in the book robbed the supermarket. The final scene of Part 1 is Flynn getting arrested for robbery.

Part 2

Flynn awakes 2 years later in an insane asylum. He is told that everything he remembers before his breakup was real, but the stress caused him to have a schizophrenic breakdown and he had multiple hallucinations. And for the past 2 years he has lived the same few months between his breakup and his arrest over and over in his mind. At the end of the book, Flynn kills his hallucination of the character from his book and he lives what seems to be happily ever after.

Setting

Part 1 takes place in a small town, mainly in a supermarket named Muldoon's

Part 2 is set inside of an asylum and later back at Muldoon's, where Flynn kills Frank (His hallucinated character).

Main Characters

Main Characters

Flynn

Supermarket is written from Flynn's point of view. Flynn is an author trying to finish his book about a guy who works at a supermarket. Flynn gets a job at the local supermarket called Muldoon's to help his writing. Flynn is an undiagnosed schizophrenic for most of the book and everything he thought he made up for his book, he had actually lived out, but forgot (Including robbing Muldoon's).

Frank

Frank is Flynn's made up character. Flynn think's that Frank is just another person who works at Muldoon's but has a weird fantasy about robbing the supermarket. Everything that Frank does, Flynn is doing but thinks that it isn't himself. "Frank" is Flynn's mental illness personified. Everytime that Frank appears Flynn gets worse, until Flynn realizes that Frank isn't real and eventually kills him at the end of the book.

Mia

Mia was Flynn's girlfriend while working at Muldoon's (Before he robbed and trashed the place). Mia didn't know that Flynn was an author until after they broke up. Mia helps break Flynn out of the mental hospital in Part 2.

Red

Red is also one of Flynn's hallucinations. Red is another patient at the mental hospital that "helps" Flynn escape from Frank. But Red is actually Frank trying to gain control Flynn, but Red helps Flynn get out of the mental hospital and kill Frank.

Conflict

Conflict

Man vs Self

Most of the conflict in Supermarket is Flynn fighting his own mental illness. He struggles with depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia.

Man vs Man

Even though Flynn's fights with Frank are technically conflicts with himself Frank is still described as a person. Flynn also has conflict with Mia before they break up, but She forgives him when she realizes his mental illness.

Favorite Scene

My favorite scene of Supermarket is the robbery. Flynn thinks he is ready to finish his book, so he decides to get into character and dress up like his character and put on black jeans and a black ski mask and start writing. What actually happened though is Flynn put on black clothes and a mask and went into Muldoon's with a gun, knocked over some shelves and stole all the money in the safe before taking off his mask and looking into the camera and going home and writing about everything he had just done.
