Rehabilitation Act - Sect. 504

The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits any discrimination of people with a disabilities anywhere, and regardless of whether or not they recieve federal funding.

September 26, 1973

Section 504 of the Rehabilitaion Act gives rights to people with disabilities so that they cannot be discriminated against by any program that recieves federal funding.

Mills v. Board of Education

August 1, 1972

Mills v. Board of Education works to extend the /right/ to special education to students with /all/ disabilities. If the funds are "insufficient" then funds will be provided so that all students can get an equal education regardless of disability.

EAHCA as P.L 94-142

This made the previous EAHCA a requirment for all public schools accepting the federal income.

Elementary & Secondary Education Act

The ESEA was designed for funding to be given to primary and secondary education schools to help them afford the materials and such needed to help fill the gap in special education.

PARC v. Pennsylvania gives education rights to students with intellectual disabilities.

Diana v. Board of Education

Diana v. Board of Education was designed so that non-native english speaking children wouldn't be incorrectly diagnosed with an intellectual disabilty and could take a test in their native language

Brown v. Board of Education

The Education for All Handicapped Children Act increased all public schools federal funding to provide equal edcaution and one free meal for children with physical and mental disabilities.

The Larry P. v. Riles legislation made so the tests used for finding disabilities are non-discrimatory.

May 17, 1954

Brown v. Board of Education was during the height of the civil rights movement, they used this to overule Plessy v. Ferguson's "separate but equal" ruling. Now, the creation of this wasn't made special education in mind at the time but it has helped the advances in the field.
