Adaptive Behaviors:

Many social behaviors of animals are adaptive, meaning that being social ultimately increases an animal's fitness.

Adaptive Behaviors

Adaptation

One adaptive behavior in the Lion King is when Simba had to adapt to eating bugs in his new habitat (Rainforest). This adaptation helped him survive by giving him a source of food in a new environment. Another adaptation was the lions adapting to eating little foods when scar took over pride rock.

Examples

Community Ecology #1

Community ecology is the study of the organization and functioning of communities.

Community Ecology #1

Competition

Ecology example

Example of competition was the lion and the hyenas throughout the movie. Through out the movie they both are fighting for leadership of pride rock.

Commercialism

Commercialism is an association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm. An example of commercialism is scar using the hyenas to take over the pride lands and become king .

Pictures

Mutualism

Mutualism

Mutualism is beneficial to both organisms involved.

An example of this in The Lion King is the bird and alligator. The Bird gets a meal, and the Alligator gets it's teeth cleaned.

Predator vs. Prey

The lions and the hyenas relationship is a great example of this. Throughout the movie they are fighting and running and back again. Another example is when scar is king and he threatens to eat the bird.

Predator vs. Prey

Community Ecology #2

In the real world i think if every Species in the savanna was to be doubled, I don"t think there would be much effect on the ecosystem its self, but on the humans. With everything doubling, the new doubles will have food so there should be no over population or extinction. However the humans in that area would be at higher risk for animals like Lions or Snakes. Of course, everything should be fine as long as the animals are not enticed by said human. But lets switch it, What if they where taken away? Well if we are saying that the plant species stay and the animals leave, then the plants would over populate. But if the plants were to leave as well this the ecosystem would go through Ecological Succession. After a disturbance occurs, ecosystems go through a natural progression or a series of changes called an ecological succession. It will go through the pioneer stage( lichens, small annual plants, herbs), then the intermediate stage ( Grasses, shrubs, shade intolerant trees), and lastly climax community ( more trees). While this process takes a long time, The animals will come back to inhabit the land.

Keystone Species

A keystone species is an organism that helps define an entire ecosystem. Without its keystone species, the ecosystem would be dramatically different or cease to exist altogether. Keystone species have low functional redundancy.

Keystone Species

Invasive Species

An invasive species can be any kind of living organism that is not native to an ecosystem and causes harm.

Invasive Species

Non-Native species

A Non-Native species is any species that is not found in that ecosystem.

Non-Native Species

Biomes

A biome is a large collection of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat. Simba is in several different biomes throughout the movie.

Biomes

Terrestrial

Simba was seen in the jungle, Dessert, and Savanna. We know he is in the savanna because of the lions and giraffes. We know he is in the jungle because of Pumbaa and Timon. We know he is in the dessert because of the bugs and bettles.

Terrestrial

Aquatic

When singing "I just cant wait to be king" Simba and Nala run through water to get away from ZaZu. We know this is a aquatic biome because this is where we see the alligator and bird.

Aquatic

Food web

In the Lion King, a food web that is shown is Grass- gazelle-Hyenas-Lion

If the producer (grass) starts off with 2300 energy then the (Herbivore) gazelle who eats the grass will consume 230 of that energy. Following the gazelle when the Carnivore (Hyenas) eat that gazelle, the Hyenas will consume 23 energy from that gazelle. Last but not least when the Hyenas are eaten by the Carnivore (Lions), the lions will then gain only 2 energy.

Energy

flow

The quote “everything you see exists in a delicate balance...respect all creatures”

Is a warning saying some have been waiting be king longer will do anything to be king. It related to the food web because with the food web when something is added it throws something else off. Such as overpopulation and extinction. In the movie Simba being born gives him the right to air which would throw off Scars balance so he kills Simba’s dad. In killing Simba’s dad Scar got the crown because he told simba it was his fault. So when simba runs away he convences "pride rock" that simba is dead.

Population

Energy flow 2

In “pride rock” Herbovors are the most numerous however in “pride lands” it’s mostly carnivores.

Bio cycle

A biogeochemical cycle, any of the natural pathways by which essential elements of living matter are circulated. Biogeochemical cycles important to living organisms include the water, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycles. In the Lion King Photosynthesis is used to run their eco system. During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) from the air and soil. The water oxides and the carbon is reduced creating Glucose. Glucose is used by plants for energy. Helping them glow. The herbovors eat them, and thats the life of pride rock.

Bio Cycles

A “sustainable society” is when we don't damage the environment or overuse resources, and are able to leave a beautiful, peaceful, and bountiful earth that future generations can continue to inhabit. When scar replaces Mufasa the environment becomes unsustainable. The animals start eating less and dying off due to the hyenas over eating the animals. There are also less vegetation because most convenors are forced to eat the plants or are given less meat.

Sustainability

Biodiversity #1

Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. The pride lands has a number of species which we see at the lion cubs birth when all the animals come to gather around pride rock. Scar was a threat to that biodiversity because with him in charge the hyenas would cause extinction within the animal kingdom with over eating.

Biodiversity #2

Going back to or food web, we see how the lions eat the hyenas. Well if the Hyenas over populated then the Hyenas would not only eat the lions they would also eat the gazelle causing extinction. ( The lions get eaten because they are over powered.

Biodiversity #2

2 abiotic and 2 biotic limiting factors

2 abiotic limiting factors: Simba ran away and had to look for a place to sleep to keep him safe. Also Simba needed shelter for clod rainy nights

2 biotic limiting factors:After Scar became king, he eats all the food. Because of this, he does not share or ration any of the food with the hyenas or the other animals. This is a limiting factor because without food as a resource the popluation dies off and decreases. Also during the drought Simba was dehydrated looking for water.

Limiting Factors

Seccession

Once they over throw scar the lions re populate and the pride lands start becoming more sustainable again. This would be Secondary secession because there were still plants just less animals.

Succession

Negative human Impact

Human Impact

In real Life, Humans have a negative impact on the savanna every day in many ways. One of the main ways is Deforestation. Deforestation is the purposeful clearing of forested land.

"According to recent estimates, the everyday world losing 137 species of plant, animals and insects due to deforestation. This number is horrifying 50,000 species become part of this every year. Deforestation affecting both animals and the environment. Trees helping in making the environment fresh and pollution-free."
