Growth, Reproduction & Adaptation

By Ms. Aprill

Earth is unparalleled!!

It harbors MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of diverse and unique living organisms.

Organisms each capable of truly amazing and wonderous things.

But have you ever considered:

The Big Picture

What makes something living?

Living Things Are Highly Organized

1. Organization

While your bedroom may be disorganized, life is not. Life requires strict organization because every organism on Earth is dependent upon specific structures to survive. Each structure works with other structures to make the millions of unique and diverse organisms we know.

Living Things Can Process Matter & Energy

2. Energy Production & Use

Yup, teenagers aren't the only organisms focused upon keeping their energy stores up. Every organism on this planet has the same basic need: FOOD! While each organism has different food needs, survival boils down to one basic principle: EAT OR DIE!

Living Things Can Maintain A Set Point

3. Response <-> Homeostasis

Kinda like how a thermostat works in our home, when something (a stimulus) causes a change to occur inside an organism, internal structures will make adjustments to return the organism's system back to its designed set point (homeostasis).

Living Things Can Always Persevere

4. Reproduction & Adaption

Organisms are born, grow, reproduce and die. That is the natural cycle of life. However, during this cycle, environments change. Thus, organisms must be able to adapt to the changes that occur. Organisms that can adapt and produce offspring best suited for these changes survive. Organisms that produce offspring unsuited for the changes, well, don't.
