A mix of political and environmental problems led to the demise of the Mayan Empire.
Many Mayan kings relied on urban reservoirs to attract farmers during the dry season, as it allowed them acsess to clean drinking water. When many mesoamerican states were consumed by a drought, the kings lost their means of power.
Mayan rulers linked their reins to deities, so people lost their trus for the ruler during a drought. Not only did this lead to a fall in the trust for government, but it led to the fallout of beleivers of Mayan Mythology.
The Mayan Calendar consist of a 365 day cycle, with 260 different named days. There were 18 months in a year, and 20 days in a month. The last month, was 5 days long. Each Calendar Round was 18,980 days long, or 52 years.
Each named day had a specific fate, while the 5 unnamed days of the bonus month were unlucky. On these days, they would engage in fasting and blood sacrafices.
The calendar was not used to keep track of time, but instead was used by rulers used to reenact the acts of the gods. This connected historical and mythological events. The calendar also determined ones fate, based upon which god their birhtday was connected to. Many of the calendars were engraved onto stone slabs or pillars.
Since the world of the gods lasted 5,125 years, the calendar ended after this many years. This is why many people bleleived the world would end in 2012.
Some people beleived the world would end in puff or smoke, or be hit by a large meteor. Others just agreed that we would be lifted into a higher plane of conciousness.
