The Great Depression

The Great Depression greatly affected people on Broadway. People couldn't go to Broadway productions because they couldn't afford it. this meant that the shows weren't making any money so the actors would lose their jobs mkaing matters even worse because more people were unemployed.

1930s

Porgy and Bess

Porgy and Bess is an opera by George Gershwin and DuBose Heyward. It was first performed on September 30, 1935, in Boston. It tells a story about a Porgy, a disabled black street-beggar living in the slums of Charleston. He attempts to rescue Bess, from the clutches of Crown, her violent drug dealer.

The Cradle Will Rock

The Cradle Will Rock is a musical by Marc Blitzstein. It was originally a part of the Federal Theatre Project. The WPA temporarily shit down the project a few days before opening night. Blitzstein decided to play the piano onstage and have the cast member sing their parts from the audience.

1937

Pal Joey

Pal Joey is a musical based off the book by John O'Hara and music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. The musical is based on a character and situations O'Hara created in a series of short stories. The main character, Joey Evans, is a manipulative small-time nightclub performer whose ambitions lead him to an affair with a wealthy married woman, Vera Simpson.

1940

This Is The Army

Irving Berlin was called upon by the government to rally the troops again as he did during WW1. This musical was full of real military men who were the actors. They would rehearse part of the day and train the rest of the day for the war. All of the revenue made from the show was given to the U.S. armed forces.
