Subject Headings
It all begins with the challenges we face when we search by keyword. There are often many ways to describe the same thing:

Keyword searching is messy
- You get results that used the right words but with the wrong meaning.
- You miss results because they did not contain the keywords you searched with.

What if there were a way to identify topics without depending on keywords in their titles?

There is. It's part of a system called
"controlled vocabularies."
Because academic databases use catalog records to describe items in them, it is possible to add terminology that identifies topics.

Part of that catalog record is one or more subject headings added by a library cataloger
Here is the hard part: That subject term is standardized. The cataloger chose it from a pre-existing list rather than making it up.
Why a pre-existing list?
Because, in a situation where several keywords could describe one concept, someone needs to decide what subject term to use.
Thus, no matter what keywords you find in a title, etc. your subject heading will identify what that subject is actually about.
Thus:
death of Christ, death of Jesus
--> Jesus Christ--Crucifixion
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
--> Cognitive therapy
Subject headings are standardized so only one term will be used.
