Types of Giftedness

How to find them

Drop out

Dropout

This type of gifted student may be one of the hardest to identify and service. They are angry and often times checked out of formal education environments. These maybe the disadvantaged students who do not have environmental supports.

Identification and support

Services

These students may not do well on the typical standardized identification processes. This will take human observation to see their giftedness. However, in order to help them develop their full potential they may need counseling to deal with the social and emotional damage their environments may have caused.

Twice exceptional

Twice Exceptional

These students excel in an area such as STEM or creative arts. However, they struggle in other areas such as mathematical understanding, difficulty writing, overall disorganization, at times behavioral issues are present.

Services

These students need an open mind in order to access their gifts. They engage more in topic of choice and in delivery methods that they find engaging. This is difficult because they will require modifications of expectations. These modifications may look like reduced number of problems, verbal expression instead of written, and different classroom requirements.

The Challenging

The Challenging

The student who wants to know why. They do not conform to the standard because I said so reasoning. They may have sarcasm and wit their peers do not understand. Working with others is difficult and others may not want to work with them.

Services

These students benefit from being able to see the whole picture and having the option to test out of materials. Instead of struggling to get this student to do several math problems, offer them the option to do the 5 hardest problems. If they demonstrate mastery allow them to progress to a more challenging level. When doing group work these students do better with others of their level of comprehension.
