First Battle of Seoul

Basic Description

Happened in June 25th, 1950 and also was the start of the Korean War.

According to worldatlas, in June 25th, 1950, North Korea first invaded South Korea. During the battle, the bridge of the Han River was destroyed by hundreds of bombs and more than hundreds of soldiers and refugees were killed. Consequently, North Korea was able to invade and take over the capital of South Korea in first three days of the Korean War.

Connections

Connections

The tension between two forces(South Korea and the United Nations and North Korea and the Soviet Union)

  • Tension= High
  • North Korea won the first battle of the Korean War and was able to gain the capital city of South Korea as a result.
  • South Korea lost their first battle and also lost their capital city as a result.
  • After this event, South Korea was so eager to gain their lost capital city back from the North Korean forces that they began to be prepared for the upcoming battles.
  • North Korea was satisfied about the result of the First Battle of Seoul and began to be so prideful of themselves.
  • Picture that I've chosen shows how North Korea take over Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, and how that incident motivated the soldiers of North Korea.

Perspectives

Perspectives

1

Perspective of North Korea and the Soviet(would view this event positively)

North Korea and the Soviet would be the force that would view this even positively because they were able to beat their opponents and even were able to take the capital city of South Korea just 3 days after the war has begun. North Korean soldiers were proud of themselves and began to think that South Korea and the United States of America was an easy opponent to defeat. They had no more worries about the war because all they have to do is to keep up the pace and do what they've originally had done to win the war.

2

Perspective of South Korea and the United States of America

(would view this event negatively)

Even though some of them would be hopeful, most of them would've felt depressed because their capital city was taken by the force that they've always thought were weaker than them. Most of the soldiers felt discouraged, and also would be the government. But, according to the interview with my grandfather, the government facing all those bad feeling, encouraged soldiers so that they would be motivated to attack North Korea back. The government would say to their soldiers, "we weren't prepared and North Korea and the Soviet attacked us unfairly. They outnumbered us in weapons and in number of soldiers. Let's prepare more and more for the upcoming battles so that we won't lose our remaining lands to them, and then back fire them to gain our invaded capital city back."

Basic Description

Basic Description

Happened in July 5th, 1950 and also was the first battle between forces of North Korea and the forces of well prepared South Korea.

On July 5th, 1950, North Korea used tanks to attack the South Korea and used 75 millimeter recoil less rifles and rocket launchers at close range. South Korea and the United States of America soon realized that North Korea and the Soviet Union was so strong compared to them and decided to retreat. This incident was also the incident where South Korea and the United States of America has realized how unprepared they were for the war. Consequently, North Korea was able to win this battle.

Connections

Connections

The tension between two forces(South Korea and the United Nations and North Korea and the Soviet Union): High

Why?

North Korea won the first battle among both fully prepared forces(South Korea and the United Nations and North Korea and the Soviet Union).

As a result, North Korea was able to win this battle and was able to make South Korea and United Nations realize how unprepared they were for the battle.

According to the image, North Korea used weapons like 75 millimeter recoil less rifles and rocket launchers and South Korea and other forces weren't able to defend them.

After this event, forces of South realized that they should be more prepared for the upcoming battles and began to prepare more that ever before.

Perspectives

1

Perspective of North Korea and the Soviet

Forces from the north were able to win once again without much of damages. Usage of weapons like 75 millimeter recoil less rifles and rocket launchers were a game changer for this battle. This battle definitely was a positive even for the forces of the north. For the upcoming battles, reiterating from before, all they should do is to keep up their original pace and do what they've originally had done.

Perspectives

2

Perspective of South Korea and the United States of America

Forces from the south lost once again and this time it was more shocking to them because they were well prepared. Even though most of them though they were prepared, they weren't able to defend themselves from North Korea and soviet's 75 millimeter recoil less rifles and rocket launchers. According to my grandfather, after this war, army generals encouraged their soldiers by saying "....They outnumbered us in weapons and in number of soldiers once again. We can't let this pattern repeat. Beginning today, we should begin preparing more and more so that we won't lose more and more lives of soldiers."

Battle of Inchon

Battle of Inchon

Basic Description

Basic Description

Happened in September 15th, 1950 and also was the game changing moment of the Korean War.

The UN made an operation that was code named Operation Trudy Jackson, which was launched a week before the actual landings on Inchon. Led by Navy Lieutenant Eugene Clark, it provided the UN troops with military intelligence. While capturing North Korea’s troops with Clark’s ship, UN cruisers and destroyers sailed to Inchon and on the morning of September 15th, 1950, they moved into position and cut the supply route of North Korea. Forces from the South were able to cut all of the supports that North Korean army usually had bringing tons of disadvantages to North Korean armies.

The tension between two forces(South Korea and the United Nations and North Korea and the Soviet Union): High

Why?

South Korea and UN forces was able to cut the supply route of North Korean troops. Basically made a game changing move that changed the result of this war.

As a result, North Korean soldiers starved for days and days and ran out of bullets, guns, and other weapons.

According to the image, South Korea invaded Inchon when North Korean soldiers were busy attacking Clark's boat, which was a trap.

After this event, South was able to kill every North Korean forces and was able to recover they lost lands, and was also able to bring back Seoul.

Perspectives

1

Perspective of North Korea and the Soviet

North Korean armies were basically unaware of the forces from the South. Therefore, South Korean armies were able to easily cut the supply route, which is also the same thing as the life of every single soldiers of North Korean forces. This battle definitely was a negative event for the forces of the north. This event made all of their soldiers starve, lack out of equipments, and lack out of clothes.

Perspectives

2

Perspective of South Korea and the United States of America

South Korea and the United States of America finally was able to make a game changing move that could change the whole result of this Korean War. Since they have cut the supply route of North Korea, all they have to do is sweep weakened North Korean armies that are in the lands that once belonged to South Korea and attack original territories of North Korea since all of their soldiers would be dead if forces from south were to sweep every single North Korea armies in South. According to my father, he said that Battle of Inchon is one of the most remarkable battle in Korean War, because South Korea and other forces began to won battles instead of losing ever since this incident.

2. Similarly, Yak bombing runs were attempted with little success.

3. 7 days after landing at Inchon, the Marines entered Seoul, making Seoul heavily fortified.

Happen in September 22nd, 1950, and was the second battle between forces from the North and forces from the South to take over the city, Seoul.

After the Battle of Inchon, North Korean tried to attack South Koreans using tank but it was cut off and were destroyed by U.S. forces. Then, North Korean even tried Yak bombing runs gaining little success. But after 7 days, navies from South Korea arrived to Seoul, making Seoul very crowded. After couple of days of the battle, South was able to regain Seoul from North Korea. As a result, forces from South were able to win this battle and about 1000 troops from South were injured or killed, while about 20,000 of North were killed or captured as prisoners. But more unfortunate things is that, after the battle, South Korean police executed more than 600 innocent people for being communist sympathizers.

Connections

The tension between two forces(South Korea and the United Nations and North Korea and the Soviet Union): High

Why?

Since South Korea and UN forces were able to cut the supply route of North Korea, they were able to easily win the Second Battle of Seoul.

As a result, South Korea was able to regain Seoul from North Korea after 3 months of losing it.

According to the image, we can know that U.S. Marines were engaged in this battle between forces of the North and forces of the South.

After this event, South was able to kill every North Korean forces and was able to recover they lost lands, and was able approach north, invading North Korea.

Perspectives

1

Perspective of North Korea and the Soviet

North Korean armies weren't ready for this battle since most of their armies were on the southern part of the peninsula. Therefore, it was basically impossible for them to win this battle. Unfortunately, even though, they gave everything they've got, they lost to the forces of the South and got Seoul taken away.

Perspectives

2

Perspective of South Korea and the United States of America

South Korea and the United States of America finally were able to gain back Seoul. Now all they have to finish this battle is to approach North and sweep every single North Korean troops and take over every single territory of North Korea. The general of South Korea have said, "Now, this could be our only chance to win this war, so be aware of enemies that may be in front of you. Always think as if this is your last chance so that you would give your best effort. Only by thinking like what I've told you, we would easily win the battle against the North Korea.

Battle of the Chosin Reservoir

Image of the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir

Basic Description

Basic Description

Happened in November 26th, 1950 and was the first battle that China began participating in the war.

After taking over Seoul, U.S forces began to rely on their material advantage, while Chinese army developed from their experience of fighting as guerrillas. After all those practices and efforts, Chinese, by then, made good use of the tactics by attacking and retreating out of nowhere and also the cold weather made the horror worse. But US forces only relying on their material advantages weren't enough to fight against the force of China. Americans began to retreat on December 6th, 1950, using air strikes to make their way to the South, and as a result, 50,000 people from China were dead and 17,843 people from South were killed.

Connections

Connections:

The tension between two forces(South Korea and the United Nations and North Korea and the Soviet Union): High

Why?

Forces of South lost to the forces of China, since the forces of South weren't able to endure the tactics of China and guerrilla attacks of China.

As a result, Forces of South retreat and used air forces to open their way to the southern part of the peninsula.

According to the image, I can know that it is impossible for the tension between 2 forces to go down since forces of China could come out of nowhere and attack troops that are in the picture.

After this event, forces of South retreated to their original territories and prepared for the upcoming battles.

Perspectives

1

Perspective of North Korea and the Soviet

Now, North Korea has one more supporter other than the Soviet Union, China. China is the country with the most population, therefore the country with the most number of soldiers. All North Korea have to do now is to make good plans about the war and use the population advantages effectively.

Perspectives

2

Perspective of South Korea and the United States of America

Now that North Korea and the Soviet Union has one more giant supporter, South Korea and the United States of America should find techniques to get rid of the population advantages that the opponent has. If not, it will be the matter of time for the Korean peninsula to become a communism nation. They need to get more helps from the United Nations, getting supports in amount of soldiers, supply for soldiers, and foods for soldiers. If South Korea and the United States of America were to be supported likewise, than all they have to do to win the war is not to be vigilant.

Third battle of Seoul

Third Battle of Seoul

Image of the Third Battle of Seoul

Basic Description

Happened in December 31st, 1950 and was the battle in the most harsh weather.

The battle began at the 38th Parallel at winter time. Since winter allowed Chinese to cross the Han River, McArthur though of retreating to the Pusan Perimeter. Meanwhile, after Mao realized they can't get rid of forces of south, Mao settled for a more limited attack. The Chinese began attacking on the night of December 31st, 1950, bombing the South Korean territory near the 38th parallel. By the next morning, the South Korean retreated, while, Chinese isolated the South Korean III Corps by attacking Kapyong and Chuncheon. By January 3rd, the UN forces’ fronts had been penetrated on all sides, so the UN Allies retreated from Seoul. The China ended up winning this battle with only 8,500 casualties, with about two-thirds of these being Chinese, and the remainder North Korean. On the other hand, the UN had 800 of their soldiers dead, wounded, and captured.

Connections

The tension between two forces(South Korea and the United Nations and North Korea and the Soviet Union): Medium

Why?

After realizing that China was going to attack territories of South Korea, South Korean armies and United States armies retreated.

As a result, some group of soldiers who weren't able to retreat were captured.

According to the image, we can know that China didn't used the guerilla method to win the battle this time, but used their advatanges in population and weapons to easily win this battle.

After this event, many of the soldiers from South were discouraged and lost some of the motivations for the war, thinking that the game has already been ended.

Perspectives

1

Perspective of North Korea and the Soviet

As we can see, China is unstoppable. When we have China on our side, we wouldn't loose a single war. The population, weapons, other supplies of China, it basically unbelieveable compared to other countries. Better in quantities and also better in qualities.

2

Perspective of South Korea and the United States of America

Now, North Korea is not our biggest problem, but is China. China is literally unstoppable. Ever since the participation of China, we are getting far far away from our goal, which is to reunite this 2 countries into a one Democratic country. Maybe our best possible result can be having a cease fire. If we were to continue this battle for more and more years, there would be more and more people dead and this peninsula would be full of blood. The damage done by war is already big enough, we shouldn't try our best to make the damages bigger, but we should try our best to make the damage as little as possible.

Battle of Kapyong

7

Image of the Battle of Kapyong

Battle of Kapyong

Basic Description

The UN force tried to block the Kapyong route, using all-around defense some meter away from each other since a continuous line was not possible. Then, each UN group then fought its small battle. Even though the UN force were heavily outnumbered, they managed to endure the Chinese attack. Also, the braveness of the Canadian and Australian troops prevented the fall of the Seoul city to the hands of Chinese. As a result, the Australian losing thirty-two men, fifty-nine wounded and three of them captured, when the Canadians lost ten men and twenty-three wounded. The Chinese called off their effort to break through to Kapyong on the 25th of April after losing over 2,000 men in the battle.

Connections

The tension between two forces(South Korea and the United Nations and North Korea and the Soviet Union): High

Why?

Group of UN soldiers were basically defend the attacks of China and even made China retreat to their territories.

As a result, they didn't loose Seoul to China, and made China retreat.

When look at the image, we can infer that all of the soldiers who were standing weren't Koreans and by that we can know that most of the soldiers who participated in this battle were soldiers from another countries that are willing to help our country.

After this event, not many of the soldiers in the forces of the South were killed or injured compared to the forces of the North, where more than 2000 people were killed.

1

Perspective of North Korea and the Soviet

Until this time, we thought that China was unstoppable. But yesterday, China was beaten by group of soldiers who even had less number of soldiers than that of China. Now we know that China can't win this war by itself. China needs our help. China needs our sacrifice. China needs our weapons. China needs our supplies.

Perspectives

2

Perspective of South Korea and the United States of America

Until yesterday, we thought that China was unstoppable. But Today we were actually able to stop them, even though the group of soldiers who stopped China were outnumbered. If we go on like this, South Korea reunifying this Korean Peninsula would really be the matter of time. Since we all know that we can easily defend North Korea and Soviet, and because China was the only variable in our heads that could change the result of the war.

Battle of Bloody Ridge

8

Image of the Battle of Bloody Ridge

Battle of Bloody ridge

Happened in August 15th, 1951 and was the most deadliest battle in the Korean War.

As the battle between the 2 forces begun once again, UN used air and artillery attacks to weaken the Communists. As a result, more than 10,000 people were dead in total from both sides. Communists retreated as they were defeated on September 5th, having almost every one of their soldiers dead and wounded.

Basic Description

Connections

The tension between two forces(South Korea and the United Nations and North Korea and the Soviet Union): High

Why?

This battle was one of the most deadliest battle in the Korean War with so many casualties.

As a result, the forces from the South, Capitalism, was able to win this battle, making the Communist parties to retreat.

When look at the image, we can make sure once again that this battle was one of the most deadliest battle in the Korean War because all of the people in the photo were dead and all of them either were on the forces of the North and on the forces of the South.

After this event, it now became clear for both sides that delaying this war to end is only making the damages caused by this war bigger, basically motivating them to finish the war as soon as possible.

1

Perspective of North Korea and the Soviet

Until this time, most soldiers that were killed in a single battle haven't pass 10,000. It always was less than 2500. But in this war, more than 10,000 people are dead. If we were to continue fighting like this, even we win, the damage that we already have would be tremendous.

2

Perspective of South Korea and the United States of America

Perspectives

It is already more than a year ever since the war has started, and nowadays we have more than 10,000 people dead in a single battle. If we were go on like this, delaying the final battle further and further, the damage that we would end up having would be tremendous. We still can win this war and reunify 2 countries once again, but the damage, that we could potentially get, would take a long time to heal them. Some of them won't even have a solution.

Therefore, we should finish this war as soon as possible.
