What is Folk Music

What is Folk Music

Folk music is the music that is sung by the people, not music recorded in a studio or performed on a stage. People learn these songs by singing them with others. The songs are passed down from generation to generation, and are often changed as they are passed down. Folk music is music of the people. It's expected that anyone can play and sing it, not just professional musicians. For many in the folk community, an interest in folk music is just one part of an interest in promoting grassroots participation.

Where did Folk music come from?

It is impossible to say exactly where much of folk music originally came from since it is often defined as existing outside of documentation and the historical record, and is often used to describe certain types of music from regions around the world. The term Folk music came from England, where they took the German word “volk”, meaning people, and applied it to mean the common people of England. The term originated in the 19th century, but folk music extends beyond that

Where did Folk Music start?

History of Australian Folk Music

Australian Folk Songs

Folk song traditions were taken to Australia by early settlers from England, Scotland and Ireland and gained particular foothold in the rural outback. The rhyming songs, poems and tales written in the form of bush ballads often relate to the itinerant and rebellious spirit of Australia in The Bush, and the authors and performers are often referred to as bush bards. The songs tell personal stories of life in the wide open country of Australia. Typical subjects include mining, raising and droving cattle, sheep shearing, wanderings, war stories, the 1891 Australian shearers' strike, class conflicts between the landless working class and the squatters (landowners), and outlaws such as Ned Kelly, as well as love interests and more modern fare such as trucking.[51] The most famous bush ballad is "Waltzing Matilda", which has been called "the unofficial national anthem of Australia".

Analysing Folk Music

"Folk music" is many hundreds of different genres. Folk music is simply whatever music that is made by people as a part of their culture, casually, and with no real expectation of earning money from it. Folk music depends upon the culture from which it derives. Folk music is any style of music which represents a community and can be sung or played by people who may or may not be trained musicians, using the instruments available to them. As times have changed, folk music has progressed to reflect the times.
