A Brief Summary:

  • "The Taliban is a religious and political group that came to power in Afghanistan in the mid-1990s. Taliban means 'students' in Pashto (an official language of Afghanistan). When the group formed, most of its members were former students of Islamic religious schools. The Taliban is known for enforcing strict Islamic law and for its support of terrorism."

  • The Taliban has a strong presence in Afghanistan and Pakistan

  • The Taliban has extreme conservative Islamic beliefs and believes women should be completely covered and submissive
  • AGAINST WESTERN CULTURE

Who was Maulana Fazlullah?

Maulana Fazlullah

  • Born 1974, killed in 2018 (Assassinated by an American drone strike)
  • Maulana Fazlullah was the leader of Tehreek Nifaz e Sharia Mohammadi (TNSM)
  • This is a sub-group of the Taliban in Swat, Pakistan
  • Initially, he was well-respected by the people living in Swat.
  • He often facilitated radio broadcasts known as "Radio Mullah" or "Maulana Radio" where he would give passionate sermons.
  • OVERTIME, HE ORDERED THAT GIRLS SHOULD NOT GO TO SCHOOL!
  • ON HIS RADIO BROADCAST, HE WOULD PRAISE YOUNG GIRLS WHO DROPPED OUT OF SCHOOL BY NAME. HE ANNOUNCED THAT THOSE WHO CONTINUED THEIR EDUCATION WOULD GO TO HELL.

I recommend this documentary. It's called "Stolen Daughters" on HBO.

  • In 2014, 276 school girls were kidnapped by gunmen in Chibok, Nigeria
  • The gunmen were a part of an Islamic terrorist group called Boko Haram
  • "Boko Haram" means "Western Education is Forbidden" in the African dialect, Hausa
  • Boko Haram has very extreme conservative views
  • Especially concerning women
  • In 2014, former First Lady Michelle Obama created the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls to raise awareness about the kidnappings in Chibok, Nigeria
  • Due to international pressure, the Nigerian government made more of an effort to address the issue. Some girls were returned but not all!
