The Cold War between the USSR and the USA created many tensions between the West powers and the Soviets. The Chinese managed to mostly avoid this by having trading deals and friendly contact with western countries.
The USSR spent much of their money on military and fighting in the Cold War which ruined their Economy. The Chinese spent their money on improving the economy and having stability.
The USSR followed a Central Planned economy while Chin switched to a market based economy and added in some capitalistic ways.
