Both started by following Marx's ideals. Although China started to separate themselves later on, they both started with the same ideals and followed Stalin.

Both the Soviet Union and China began their communist reign by overthrowing the government. In Russia, the Bolsheviks over there the Royal Romanov family. The Stalin-inspired chinese overthrew the Qing Dynasty

5 year plans

Both countries followed 5 year plans. Stalin had 3. The first: Agriculture and heavy industry, the second: Steel, oil, electricity, and coal production, and the third: military and productivity per capita. China's five year plan lasted 1953-57. Its focus was industrialization following the Soviet model.

Freedoms

The soviets held a strict rule. Over the entirety of their existence they rarely made any changed to their structure. Soviets kept many freedoms from citizens and would stay that way until they dissolved. In China, the government made reforms to give more freedoms back and provide balance.

The Cold War between the USSR and the USA created many tensions between the West powers and the Soviets. The Chinese managed to mostly avoid this by having trading deals and friendly contact with western countries.

The USSR spent much of their money on military and fighting in the Cold War which ruined their Economy. The Chinese spent their money on improving the economy and having stability.

The USSR followed a Central Planned economy while Chin switched to a market based economy and added in some capitalistic ways.
