SHERLOCK HOLMES VS CASTLE

How have detectives evolved from the Victorian era to the present?

INTRODUCTION

Detective novels have captivated readers for centuries with their thrilling plots, mysterious crimes, and clever detectives.

Let´s compare an old detective like Sherlock Holmes, with a modern detective, like Castle

Sherlock Holmes

The story of Sherlock Holmes takes place in London in the Victorian era during the 18th century. His office was located in Baker Street as well as his house.

PLACEMENT

Castle

The Castle television show takes place in New York around 2009. Inspector Becket and writer Richard Castle work together in the 12th precinct; although Castle´s house is located in Broome Street

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is an unemotional, ironic, witty and intellectually restless private detective. He is sometimes a bit brusque, especially when he has to deal with criminals like this.

Castle

PERSONALITY

Castle is an American writer who works with the New York police. Despite having a childish behavior and even a little irresponsible, he is a key player in solving the mysteries that surround the murders, thanks to his fiction and mystery novels.

The two detectives have in common that they work with a partner, Sherlock works with Doctor Watson and Castle works with inspector Becket. Watson is characterized by being loyal, sarcastic, stubborn and disinterested on multiple occasions. He is also very intelligent, which is very helpful when solving a case. A brave man who cares about others. Inspector Beckett, like Watson, is a brave girl who never gives up on anything, and finds it hard to trust others.

Sherlock Holmes

To discover the secret behind the crimes, Sherlock Holmes used three elements: fingerprints, code breaking and handwriting analysis. When it came to fingerprints, he was able to know down to the smallest detail. First he observed. No starting with questions or making decisions. Observation of the scene was enough to resolve the most important questions, then he would hypothesize, discarding and disproving each one until he arrived at the truth.

SOLVING CRIMES

Castle

Today, to solve crimes, detectives use sophisticated instruments and are assisted by forensic medicine. They also study weapons and are able to access all the data of the accused, something that would have been impossible in the past.

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock holmes was not very tidy, but to concentrate he used to play the violin and smoke a pipe, he also tried to think outside the box.

Castle

HABITS

To solve crimes, Castle usually reads a lot of books and writes, which makes him very creative and has quite original, although not always realistic, ideas. In addition, before seeing a new case and during the investigation, he usually drinks a lot of coffee. When he is blocked, he usually turn to his mother or his daughter to broaden his ideas.

In our opinion, we think that the methods to solve crimes have changed a lot since the time of Sherlock Holmes until now, but one thing they all still have in common is their courage and a big open heart to help everyone.
