Nuclear Weapons

About

Nuclear Weapons have evolved greatly since the early stages.A great accomplishment would eventually turn into a threat.

1898

The first clue towards finding nuclear weapons was found by Marie and Pierre Curie. It was at this time that the element radium was found

1898

1905

Albert Einstein came up with a theory of relativity, which created the equation E = mc^2. This helped solve the problem which puzzled the Curies since Radium was creating limitless energy. With this equation, they figured out that the mass multiplied by the speed of light squared would indeed create energy.

1905

1942

In the year 1942, the United States conducted a project to develop the first ever nuclear bomb. This project was named as the "Manhattan Project" and was lead by J.Robert Oppenheimer. The United States' main purpose to develop a nuclear weapon was to get ahead of the oppostion during World War II.

1942

1945

On August 6th, 1945, the United States dropped the first ever nuclear bomb on the Japenese city of Hiroshima. This was expected to get the Japanese to surrender the war, but after the Japenese stood tall after the bombing, the U.S bombed another city three days later.

1945

1961

In 1961, the Soviet Union unleashed a new force. It was the biggest bomb yet to exist, weighing about 58 megatons. This was dropped over parts of northern Russia.

1961

1968

A treaty which stated that several nations agreed on never acquiring nuclear weapons. However, for the countries that already had nuclear weapons, the treaty was pushing to get those weapons disarmed. This was called the Non-Profileration Treaty.

1968

1996

On July 8th, 1996, The International Court of Justice made nuclear weapons illegal. They stated that these weapons would be a contrary to law, and advise to make them illegal.

2017

In today's world, there are multiple nuclear weapon threats and many countries are still owners of nuclear warheads. North Korea has tested its nuclear weapons many times over the past few months. To prevent a nuclear war from happening, the United Nations, or the UN, votes to adopt a treaty that prohibits nuclear weapons.
