Exclusion of Aboriginals

Aboriginal people were excluded from the census figures until 1971 because the British did not see the Aboriginal people as a part of their new colony forming in Australia. Underlying racist beliefs and beliefs of white superiority most likely contributed to this choice. The British viewed the Aboriginals as 'uncivilised' and believed them to be inferior; the clashing cultures separated the British and Aboriginals, keeping them from uniting and likely leading the British to view them as not a part of the new population of Australia. Due to the conflict between the two groups, the British also could not have tracked and recorded the number of Aboriginal tribes. As decades went by, Aboriginal missions were established and increased in numbers, leading to the inclusion of Aboriginals in the census figures.
