Cort: Brave and responsible
Cort's Dad: Smart and resourceful
Liza: likes Cort
Francie: loves the dog Catfish and is young
Catfish: dog that loves the houseboat
Cort lives on a houseboat near a girl he likes named Liza. He lives with with his dad in Florida and also helps his dad with his job working in the swamps to help people catch alligators
A hurricane comes in and Cort and his dad have to help Liza's family get ready for the hurricane by boarding up the windows and getting a generator ready.
While Francie was playing with Catfish, Catfish decides that he wants to go back to the houseboat and runs with Francie caught on the leash. Liza and Cort go looking for her in the houseboat. They take a boat to the houseboat because the supports broke and the house boat is floating away. They float away from the boat while on the houseboat and end up in the swamp where they swim a long way to the mounds, leaving Catfish on the boat, only to be met by many dangerous animals that also have the same idea.
Liza, Cort, and Francie all climb up in a willow tree after Cort got tusked by a boar in the leg. They have to survive in the tree until they can make it out without being eaten or attacked by the boars on the mound and alligators in the water.
Cort decides to swim to find help and finds his dad in a boat looking for him. Cort and his dad go back to mound where the boar that tusked Cort tries attacking the boat so Cort's dad holds the boar in a hangknot while Cort goes to save the girls but the boar got out of the hangknot. When the boar got out of the hangknot the bear bear that Francie named Elmo drops down from the tree they were just on and saves them while they get to the boat and drive off to an ambulance where they get taken to a hospital.
After Liza and Cort get out of the hospital everything goes back to normal, everything is being fixed up around them, Cort's dad is building him and Cort a house, and Cort asks Liza to the dance.
I liked the book a lot, especially the exciting parts. Something I did not like in the book is that the book started out slow. I would recommend this book for people that like books with a lot of things action.
