Kiowa Tribe

Geographical Location

Geography Location

The Kiowa tribe is a tribe located in the plains region, but more specifically on the border of Oklahoma. The people of Kiowa grew a lot of crops, fished if there was a lake or river near them, and hunted small rodents. However, the thing that they are most known for is eating buffalo as a main food source. They ate buffalo because it was easy to find, it was a lot of meat, and they could use there skin, hides, and other parts of there body to make things like weapons, tipis, and other tool or technology. In the place where the kiowa tribe is located there are lots of forests, mountains, prairies, rivers, lakes, canyons, and mesas which means that they had a lot of access to a lot of different resources.

Housing

Housing & Clothing

Lived in tipis made of sticks and buffalo hides

Had designs to show who owned it by having something specific to the person that lived in them. The tipis were dragged by horses if they needed to travel. Did not have wheels or carts so it was difficult to transport them. The tipis were a nomatic type of house which means that they are easy to transport. I think that it was a suitable way of transportation for their way of living.Women wore deerskin dresses painted yellow, green tribal designs. Men wore leather leggings, and were usually shirtless. The people of Kiowa wore moccasins on their feet usually. They were very into earthy colors like yellow, green, and brown.

Tipis

The tipis were made out of buffalo hide and wood for the most part.

Families

An average tipi could house a family of 5 due to them being very tall and strong.

Treaties

Treaties

The Kiowa medicine lodge treaty was signed in 1865 between Kiowa, Comanche, Kiowa-Apache, Cheyenne, and Arapaho and settlers from modern-day Texas and Oklahoma. The tribes gave all claims to the southern plains. They also agreed to reside on government land in Indian Territory in present-day western Oklahoma and Texas. The tribes also had to end all hostilities with pioneers and release all captives. The treaty was a failure after the man that was running it died and uero-american settlers started invading there tarotory. I beleive that if the kiowas tribe didn't loose the leader of the treaty, they would have more land today.

Crafts

Individuals may have been told through a vision what objects were their medicine and the rituals to perform to give their medicine power. They invented the photoral calendar. The had a lot of very good long range weaponry and combat. This included crossbows, arrow heads, and blow darts.

They performed and hosted Sun dances which are public annual American Indian religious ceremony before summer bison hunt. Gave special respect to the bison because they were there main recourse for food and hides, bear, and eagle.
