Early Life

  • parents: King George VI and Queen Elizabeth
  • full name: Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor
  • named after her mother, great-grandmother, grandmother
  • called "Lilibet" by her close family
  • 29 May 1926: baptized in the private chapel of Buckingham Palace
  • 1930: her only sibling, Princess Margaret, was born
  • educated at home of her mother and her governess
  • her governess published a biography of Elizabeth's childhood years -> Elizabeth's love of horses and dogs -> her orderliness -> her attitude of responsibility

Marriage

  • 1934 and 1937: Elizabeth met her future husband, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark
  • they are third cousins
  • 1939: she said she fell in love with Philip, they began to exchange letters
  • 9 July 1947: their engagement was officially announced
  • engagement was not without controversy -> Philip had no financial standing -> he was foreign-born -> had sisters who had married German noblemen -> some of the King's advisors didn't think he's good enough for her
  • 20 November 1947: married at Westminster Abbey
  • after the war, german people weren't welcome in the UK -> Phillips sisters weren’t invited to the marriage
  • 14 November 1948: Prince Charles, their first child, was born
  • after that, they got 3 more children
  • they traveled a lot around the world, their children stayed in England

Reign: Accession and Coronation

  • 6 February 1952: when they were on a travel, they got the information, that Elizabeth's father died -> went back home to the funeral -> Elizabeth ascended the throne -> Queen of the UK and Commonwealth Realms -> they moved into Buckingham Palace
  • Elizabeth decided for no change in the name Windsor of the royal house
  • 2 June 1953: the coronation went ahead
  • the ceremony took place in Westminster Abbey
  • reigned as a constitutional monarch through major political changes
  • 2017: first British monarch to reach a Sapphire Jubilee

  • 1981: -> June: six shots were fired at the queen, but they were blanks -> July: the Queen awoke in her bedroom to find an intruder -> October: Christopher John Lewis fired a shot but missed
  • 1983: Lewis attempted to murder Charles

1990

Hard years

  • 1992: "Annus Horrible" -> March: her second son, Prince Andrew, and his wife separated -> April: her daughter, Princess Anne, divorced her man -> November: a large fire broke out at Windsor Castle -> December: Prince Charles and his wife, Diana, formally separated -> monarchy came under increased criticism and public scrutiny
  • August 1996: the divorce was finalised
  • August 1997: Diana was killed in a car crash
