The Soviet Union wanted to take over the Lithuanian television and radio to start spreading propaganda and force people to believe that the Lithuanian government were leading people to ruin.
In 1991, Michael Gorbachev demanded the restoration of the constitution of the USSR in Lithuania and even threatened with a military intervention which later would be seen as a real threat. Soviet troops and vehicles were sent to Lithuania and tension was rising. On January 11, 1991, the soviet military seized the National Defence Department buildings.
After Lithuania’s independence restoration in 1990, Lithuania underwent a difficult period of time for the country- the Soviet Union imposed an economic blockade in the country. It made the recently restored country weak. The government had to raise the prices several times and inflation was rapidly rising for a short period of time. Therefore Michael Gorbachev thought that because of this blockade Lithuanian would re-establish the constitution of the USSR.
Food rationing started. An unauthorized rally organized by the Lithuanian Freedom League took place in Vilnius, near the Government House. There were protests against price increases and demanded the resignation of the Government and instead demanded the restoration of the constitution of the USSR in Lithuania.
The January events in Lithuania, on January 11-13,1991, were one of the most crucial events in modern Lithuania’s history. When the resistance of Lithuanian people were protecting the country against the Soviet Union army, which attempted to restore the constitution of the USSR in the Republic of Lithuania. The idea of reestablishing the constitution began when after declaring independence in 1990, the Soviets imposed an economic blockade in the country: energy shortages and economic problems made the recently restored country weak. Which in Michael Gorbachev’s opinion would force Lithuania back into the USSR. But the Supreme Council of Lithuania opposed to this offer. Therefore the Soviet Union started spreading propaganda saying that the Lithuanian Parliament and government were leading the people to ruin.

And on January 11, 1991, the soviet military seized the National Defense Department buildings. Then, on January 13 by using brutal force the military attempted to take over more governmental buildings but didn’t succeed due to thousands of people protecting who were protecting them and fighting for freedom.
