Personal Life

Friedrich Froebel was born into a strongly devoted Christian family in Germany on April 21, 1782. His own father was a pastor of the orthodox Lutheran in his hometown, meaning much of his early education was based upon his Christian roots. Sadly, at just 9 months old, Friedrich's mother passed away, profounding influencing his life. Although living in a sad childhood situation without a mother-figure, Friedrich still found great joy in play and the outdoors, growing a respect & love for nature which remained the entire duration of his life.

Beginning Careers and Schooling

At the young age of 15, Friedrich followed his compassion for nature and the world and started work as an apprentice to a forester. Shortly after accepting this position, he found himself in school for the study of botany and mathematics. He also worked 3 short years as a land surveyor while in school. Although attending schools off and on for several years, Friedrich lastly attended in Berlin, but left before receiving his certificate.

Start in Education

Start in Education

Friedrich first became an educator in 1805 when he accepted a position at a secondary school, the Musterschule. Here, he learned of the educational strategies and ways of Pestalozzi which greatly influenced his own educational developments and contributions. Pestalozzi held a grand respect for children and favored creating an emotional security that allowed them to explore with play and activity in their own learning. This is a belief that Friedrich greatly appreciated and displayed in his own educational contributions. Along with being a physical educator in institutes, he also was known for writing various important educational works such as The Educating Families, Features of Human Education, and The Education of Man, perhaps his biggest work.

C

The Creation of Kindergarten

In the year of 1837, after working several months exclusively in a pre-school educational setting, Friedrich developed the coined name "kindergarten." He expressed a need for training and educating young children to prepare them for success. But his vision for his kindergarteners was not that of the usual, prevalent view of the time. He believed in play and activity to educate.

B

"Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child's soul."

- Friedrich Froebel

Play was such an important aspect of Friedrich's envisionment for his students that he designed and produced educational play materials including: building blocks, pattern blocks, geometric shapes, etc. all of which are still used in a kindergarten setting today.

Other aspects and contributions to the creation of kindergarten that Friedrich incorporated in his studies were "free work" which allowed students to express themselves in full through activities such as singing, dancing, gardening and self-directed play.

Friedrich's Teachings Today

Friedrich Froebel's approach and theories ...

Friedrich Froebel's approach and theories of childhood education helped to develop childhood development and education in other academic settings worldwide, with the first kindergarten classroom in the U.S. deriving in the year of 1856. Since then, his approach cstill be experienced today, as every school consists of kindergarten classrooms. Within these classrooms, there are activities and lessons based around materials, such as building blocks, developed by Friedrich. By his devotion to childhood education, children in modern day classrooms are given the abilities to express themselves and academically prosper through play.
