Aim: What is the author's purpose in repeatedly inserting Rhyme Scheme, as per the Craft & Structure of our whole-class biographical novel, Becoming Muhammad Ali, by Kwame Alexander and James Patterson?

DO NOW: What's a Rhyme Scheme?

Definition

Rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyme that comes at the end of each verse or line in poetry. That stated, this literary device can be inserted into genres other than prose and poetry; such as, non-fiction, biography, historical-fiction, etc. Rhyme Scheme draws the reader closer into the text by engaging the audience (Grades 3 & 4), through lyrical syntax; as an ordinary paragraph might be transformed into a short verse with a fire beat and slaying pace.

Many poems are written in free verse style. Some other poems follow non-rhyming structures, paying attention only to the number of syllables.

example: Haiku

Additional Structures that speak to rhyme scheme that author's and writer's or you can use, should you want to engage a larger following.

Other Structures

Thus, Rhyme Scheme demonstrates that authors, rappers, lyricists, composers, creative writers, poets, soothsayers and oral story-tellers, all write poems in a specific type of rhyme scheme or rhyming pattern, on purpose, and with strategic intentions. There are several types of rhyme schemes that we are going to learn about today; which refer to, but also directly connect to the rhyme scheme found in our whole class text, Becoming Muhammad Ali, by ZKwame Alexander and James Patterson.

Twenty odd years have turned to air;

Now she’s the girl I didn’t dare

Approach, ask out, much less declare

My love to, mired in young despair.

All turn and look one way.

They turn their back on the land.

They look at the sea all day.

Oh, Galuppi, Baldassaro, this is very sad to find!

I can hardly misconceive you; it would prove me deaf and blind;

But although I give you credit, ’tis with such a heavy mind!

Why are Rhyme Schemes Important?

Function

Rhyme Scheme helps foster a meaningful relationship; an emotional and musical experience.

Rhyme aids the memory for recitation and gives predictable pleasure. It gives the audience a sixth sense regarding the mindset and sentiment of the characters in the book.

EXIT TICKET #2: Reasons authors & writers use the literary device: RHYME SCHEME is to bring their story's purpose closer to the reader's own life.

How does the Rhyme Scheme in Mockingbird bring you closer towards enduring understanding of the author's purpose?
