Definition

It is an acute infection caused by the bacteria called Corynebacterium diphtheriae.

The bacterium that causes diphtheria spreads through respiratory droplets, such as those produced by coughing or sneezing, from an infected person or from someone who carries the bacteria but has no symptoms.

The bacteria most commonly infect the nose and throat. Throat infection produces a tough, stringy gray to black pseudo membrane or covering that can block the airways.

Symptoms

  • A thick, gray membrane that lines the throat and tonsils.
  • Shortness of breath or rapid breathing.
  • Runny nose.
  • Fever and chills

Symptoms

Problem applied in Ecuador

Problem applied in Ecuador

The problem is that many do not have

the complete vaccination schedule since its caregivers for various causes

they did not attend the health facility.

The neglect of parents at the time of vaccination, has

pushed health care organizations to implement

strategies that emphasize going to health posts, such as

brigades in schools and in the community.

Applications in Nursing

  • Treat the patient with due respect, speaking by name.
  • Hand washing before and after caring for the patient.
  • Placement of mask (its continued use should not exceed two hours).
  • Gown placement if contaminated material is to be contacted.
  • Provide you with the medication prescribed by the doctor.
  • Single room or grouping by cases. If this is not possible, keep the patient one meter away from the rest of the sick or visitors.
  • We must control vital functions (T °, P / A, P °, R °). The thermometer must remain in the room for your exclusive use.
  • Limit transportation, if it is not possible to put a mask on the patient.
  • And always keep the patient informed of all procedures and their general condition.

Conclusion

Diphtheria is an infection caused by the bacteria Corynebacterium Diphtheriae. Its signs and symptoms, which usually manifest 2 to 5 days after exposure, can range from mild to severe. Symptoms often come on gradually, starting with a sore throat and fever. In severe cases, the bacterium generates a toxic product (toxin) that gives rise to a thick gray or white plaque at the bottom of the throat, plaque that sometimes, by blocking the airways, makes breathing or swallowing difficult and It can also cause a dry cough. Hypertrophy of the lymph nodes can cause swelling of part of the neck
