Questions with Mr. el-Saed

Questions with Mr.

el-Saed

What does Mr. el-Saed mean when he says his hands are symbolically “handcuffed?”

"Handcuffed"

It means that he is leaving the whole world behind him, because God is the only thing that matters when he is praying. Then he is coming to the Lord. Carson

How does Mr. el-Saed seem to feel about praying?

Feeling on prayer

He is very involved in his prayer and he is very serious about it, he sets his watch every day and he stops whatever he is doing to pray at the specific times throughout the day that he is supposed to be praying. Carson

Describe the process Muslims go through to prepare to pray

Preparations for Prayer

Prayers for Muslims require them to unite their mind, body and soul in worship. The movements they perform help them to make sure that they are in the right mindset when they pray. They put aside all other thoughts so they can concentrate specifically on God. Also, Muslims must be clean before they pray. They make sure of this by performing a ritual washing, called wudhu. Emily

Praying in Islam

In many Islamic countries, praying sets the pattern of the day for the entire population, including non-Muslims.

Salat is the obligatory Muslim prayers, performed 5 times each day by Muslim.

All people must try to do this, even young children and elders. Emily

Salat al-fajr: dawn, before sunrise

Salat al-zuhr: midday, after the sun passes its highest

Salat al-'asr: the late part of the afternoon

Salat al-maghrib: just after sunset

Salat al-'isha: between sunset and midnight

Process of Praying in Islam

What do the prayers sound like and what is something they say?

Sounds

It sounds like a mix between singing and humming in an non-understandable language, because the prayers are said in arabic.

Carson

Takbir is entering into the state of prayer by glorifying God.

To begin this act of prayer, they say 'Allahu Akbar' meaning God is great.

Emily

What do the movements look like?

Movements

They perform a whole series of movements to go with the words of prayers.

They raise their hands to their ears or shoulders, kneel on the ground, bend down, sit, and lay on their knees with their arms laying flat on the ground while praying. Emily

How is it similar?

In Catholicism and Christianity there is prayer to God just as Muslims pray to Allah.

Allah does not need human prayers because he has no needs at all. In a similar way, God does not need our prayers, but we have a relationship of love with him.

Muslims pray because God has told them that they are to do this, and because they believe that they obtain great benefit in doing so.

We also do this because we believe praying to God benefits us and helps our lives.

Just as Christians face a cross or crucifix while praying, Muslims face towards Mecca while praying. Emily/Carson

How is it different?

Differences of prayer in Islam to other religions

Muslims do not pray for the benefit of Allah, but in other faiths prayer is for the benefit of God or the gods. Just as Christians face a cross or crucifix while praying, Muslims face towards Mecca while praying. Emily/ Carson
