Tom is introduced at the beginning of the party as Daisy's husband. He is an athletic man who played football in college at New Haven. Tom was a very wealthy man who was of old money. Tom owned a large mansion in East Egg. Tom had every possible thing that he could have asked for. This is good fortune as tom is in a really good position

Tom Cheats on Daisy

Tom takes his friend nick with him to NYC where he meets Myrtle (his mistress). Tom feels unfulfilled in his marriage with Daisy as he begins to cheat on her. This event is of good fortune as Tom gets what he wants which is an affair with Wilson.

Scotts Fitzgerald most likely gives Toms charecter a mistress to show that he is in a similar position to Gatsby as they both seek women outside of marraige. This shows that Tom and Gatsby are more alike than they think.

Myrtle's Broken Nose

Tom and Myrtle decide to throw a party in their apartment. During the party Myrtle starts to talk about Daisy and insists that Tom break up with her. Tom becomes angry that Myrtle mentions Daisy and ends up slapping Myrtle breaking her nose. This is misfortune as at this point Toms relationship with Myrtle takes a turn and begins to go downhill.

Party at Gatsby's

Tom hears about Gatsby and decides to stop by his house and invite himself and Daisy to one of his parties. Tom attends the party and instantly becomes jealous of Gatsby's wealth he tells Daisy that Gatsby's fortune came from bootlegging. Tom begins to have suspicions about Daisy and Gatsby. This is misfortune as Tom knows that he is loosing his wife Daisy to Gatsby.

Tom's Big Discovery

Gatsby shows up to Toms house because Daisy plans on confessing her love for Gatsby and break up with Tom. Right as Gatsby attempts to say he is in love with Daisy, she interrupts and says that they should go to New York. Tom agrees to New York. At this point Tom becomes aware of Daisy and Gatsby's relationship. This event is misfortune as Tom finds out that his wife is having an affair.

Scott FItzgerald most likely included this scene to show that Daisy is not ready to leave Tom as she does not let Gatsby express their mutual love. This event also was written to signal a turning point in the story where Daisy's feelings for Gatsby start to fade as Daisy is overcome by her love for Tom.

Drinks in New York

In New York Tom rents a hotel room where everyone enjoys iced drinks. Tom confronts Gatsby about his business and accuses him of lying about attending Oxford. Tom asks Gatsby about his relationship with Daisy. Gatsby replies saying that he loves her and that Daisy never loved him. Tom gets on Gatsby's nerves causing him to loose his temper. Daisy dosent admit his love for him and decides to stay with Tom. Tom believes that Daisy can't hurt him to prove his point he tells Gatsby to drive her home in his own car. This event is good fortune as Tom knows that he still has Daisy as Gatsby will not be able to take her away from him.

Scott Fitzgerald most likely included this event to show the down fall of Gatsby as he looses his temper and is unable to win over Daisy.

The Death of Myrtle

On Tom's drive back from New York he notices that people begin to gather around Wilson's garage which is where Myrtle lived. Tom discovers that Myrtle had been run over by a car which belonged to Gatsby. Wilson believes that it was Tom who ran Wilson over as he was driving Gatsby's car earlier. Tom tells Wilson that it was Gatsby's car and where he can find Gatsby. This event is misfortunate as Tom looses his Mistress which devestates him.

Scott Fitzgerald would most likely include this event to show the death of Tom's love interest. This event also shows the trickery of Tom as it shows why Tom wanted them to switch cars on their way to New York. Finally this event shows that Tom contributed to Gatsby's death as he tells Wilson that Myrtles death was Gatsby's fault.

Tom's Happy Ending

Tom and Daisy workout their differences. They decide to leave East Egg with their daughter and move away to an unknown destination, This is good fortune as Tom stays with Daisy and leaves all of his problems behin on East Egg.
