What is Graphic Design?

  • Graphic design is simple- when speaking in general terms. It is about creating visual concepts (using computer software or by hand) to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, and captivate consumers.
  • Graphic designers develop the overall layout and production design for applications such as advertisements, brochures, magazines, reports, etc.
  • However, that is solely in simplistic terms because there are many jobs in the world of graphic design.

Overall Day

A typical day in the life of a graphic designer consists of the following:

  • Meet with clients or the art director to determine the scope of a project
  • Advise clients on strategies to reach a particular audience
  • Determine the message the design should portray
  • Create images that identify a product or convey a message
  • Develop graphics for product illustrations, logos, and websites
  • Select colors, images, text style, and layout
  • Present the design to clients or the art director
  • Incorporate changes recommended by the clients into the final design
  • Review designs for errors before printing or publishing them

Graphic designers work with both text and images. They decide the type, font, size, color, and line length of headlines, headings, and text. Graphic designers also determine how images and text will go collectively on a print or web-page.

  • Typography 3
  • Communication Design 1
  • Information Design Concepts and Methodologies
  • Processes and Workflows: Visual Interaction Design
  • History of Design

plus one of:

  • History and Development of Typography
  • Evolution of Information Design
  • History and Culture of Interaction Design
  • History of Media in Graphic Design
  • Graphic Design in Canada

Third year students must enroll in the following:

  • Research in design
  • Design Placement
  • and 6 credits at the 3000 and/or 4000 level in Design Studies

Fourth Year (graduating year) students must enroll in the following:

  • Design Workshop
  • Professional Aspects of Design
  • 6 credits at the 3000 and/or 4000 level in Design Studies
  • Students will then choose from a range of practicum courses.

  • York has flexible offerings; meaning if you have a life full of a variety of responsibilities (school, work, family) you have the possibility of taking classes at night or on the weekends, and can chose among traditional in-class courses, online courses or courses that offer a mixture of both (blended classes)
  • It has excellent support services for and beyond the classroom
  • York has on-campus employment to help you with financing your education and budgeting for your life while at university
  • I chose York University because it offers the education that I want and is conveniently not far from where I live
