Child Poverty In Canada

The Issue:

The Issue

The issue is that children are in poverty. Children deserve to be fed properly, to have a good place to live and sleep. Instead, lots of children are living poor lives, without enough money to pay for their basic needs, including housing, clothing, and food. That is not how they should be living their lives! In fact, 1 in 5 children live in poverty. That's about 20% of children in Canada are living in poverty. That's equal to the population of Saskatchewan!

Who and How is

the Issue Impacting Individuals?

Who and How is the Issue Impacting Individuals?

Kids from low salary families have trouble with buying important needs, such as food and water because they have less financial resources. Kids who live in poor households may suffer from inadequate needs. Inadequate means like lacking something you need. Kids that live in poverty for their whole life they might get into illegal activities or addiction to alcohol because of depression. Some illegal substances include drugs.

Which level(s) of government are involved and why?

Which Level(s) of Government are Responsible? Why?

1.3 million children live in poverty, and that number is slowly growing. The federal government is trying to help with this, but has failed numerous times. Provincial, Territorial, and Municipal governments are making programs to help reduce this number, and in 2019 and 2020, it helped a lot. All the levels of government are really important to help stop poverty because they can do something and they have lots of power in the area they are in control of. For example cities can create affordable housing projects to help people in poverty.

What action is the government taking to help address the issue?

What action is the government taking to help address the issue?

Half of the people in poverty in Canada, are children. So, the provincial territorial and municipal governments have set up programs and are raising money to help people get out of poverty. It has helped a lot and it got 322,000 kids out of poverty, (in 2019) which is a good start, but we need to to do more if we want everyone to live good life and get everything that they deserve, we need to make a lot more progress. They have also set up projects to make housing more affordable. Service Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency have been helping to raise awareness of the Canadian Child Benifits (CCB) so families can access their basic needs. The CCB is run by the government of Canada and gives money to people every year to people who don't make are don't make lots of money.

Do you think that the government's’ response to the issue, as well as any advocate groups, is helping to address the issue? Is there anymore that can be done to respond to the issue?

I think that the government is doing well, but they could also improve there plans. The government is helping, but I think they could expand some of the programs to help people in poverty. Maybe build even more affordable homes, make more food donations, and money donations. Lower costs of items in stores, so they are more affordable for everyone. If the government increased the minimum wage from $15, to say $18 that would help people get more money that they need. All those things could possibly help to get children, and also adults out of poverty, and living a good healthy life.
