The Boreal Shield is the largest eco-zone in Canada covering almost 20% of Canada's land masses.
The Boreal Shield covers parts of six provinces:
- Alberta
- Ontario
- Quebec
- Saskatchewan
- Manitoba
- Newfoundland & Labrador
Both coniferous and deciduous trees can be found in this eco-zone. The soil in this eco-zone is very leached and wet in some areas which can result in the restriction of plant growth.
In this eco-zone the majority of provinces are a continental climates with long, cold winters and short, warm summers.
Cold air masses over Hudson Bay bring in large amounts of precipitation to most of the areas.
Due to this eco-zone covering such a large area, the temperature and precipitation can vary quite a lot. The closer you get to Newfoundland and Labrador the more maritime-like the areas will get.

In conclusion, the Boreal Shield is a very unique eco-zone with lots of things to learn about it and almost 3 million people living within it. It is home to over 85 different species as well as a variety of many different plants and trees. It is the largest eco-zone in Canada and it was interesting for us to see how two cities in the same eco-zone can have completely different results.
