Athena Parthenos

Kayden Bergstrom

Stolen in the Night

Missing

For thousands of years this 40 foot tall statue stood in Athens, but than one night it disappeared. The Athena Parthenos weighed 2,400 pounds and yet it was stolen without a trace. To this day we still don't know exactly where it went. Some people believe it was stolen by the Romans and taken to Constantinople to be destroyed, but we can't be sure.

How Much Did it Cost

The Athena Parthenos was a ivory and gold statue inside the Athena Parthenon in Athens which cost Greece only 7 million dollars today. The Parthenos cost Athens 1.4 trillion dollars! (According on what I could find). That's as much as 9 Apollo Space Missions. Thats even more than the government spends a year on Social Security which is what the Government spends the most money on. Thats more than the top ten richest people in the world combined.

Building the Athena Parthenos

Building

The Athena Parthenos was built by perhaps the most acclaimed sculptor of Ancient Greece Phidias. It was made to proclaim to the world the success of Athens after the Persian Wars. It was described by the ancient writer Pausanias. He said that the statue is created with ivory and gold. On the middle of her helmet is a statue that looks like the Sphinx and on either side of the helmet are griffins. The statue of Athena is upright standing about 40 feet tall, with a tunic reaching to the feet, and in the middle of her chest is the head of Medusa worked in ivory. She holds a statue of the greek goddess of Victory Nike .in the other hand she holds a spear; at her feet lies a shield and near the spear is a serpent. This serpent would be Erichthonius.

The Ancient Replicas

In ancient times many nations tried to copy this great statue. First there's the Varvakeion Athena, a 3rd-century CE Roman copy in marble is housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. This is usually considered the most faithful version. Then there's the Lenormant Athena, a small unfinished copy, perhaps of the 1st century CE. It is also in the National Museum, Athens. There's a copy at the Louvre and another at the Museo Nazionale Romano in Rome. Next there is a 3rd-century BC Roma reduced-scale copy of the statue's shield, from the Strangford Collection, is conserved at the British Museum. The last ancient copy is a 3rd-century BC Roman copy that reduced the size of the scale it is located at the British Museum. A modern copy of the Athena Parthenos made by Alan LeQuire is found at the Parthenon in Nashville. Standing at a litte over 41 feet it is the tallest indoor statue in the Western World. It stood in Nashville's Parthenon as a plain white statue for over twelve years. In 2002, Parthenon volunteers gilded Athena under the supervision of gilder Lou Reed. The gilding project took less than four months and makes the modern statue appear that much more like the way that Phidias made it in Ancient Greece.
