What Biomass

Energy?

Biomass

Biomass energy is created by the burning (combustion) or biochemical conversion of any organic matter to be used for fuel

Biomass as alternate

source of energy

Biomass as alternate source of Energy

Why?

- Minimizes the CH4 emission into the environment

-source fueling is organic matter such plants and animals (renewable source have relativly low cardon content)

-Biomass contains stored energy from the sun. Plants absorb the sun's energy in a process called photosynthesis. When biomass is burned, the chemical energy in biomass is released as heat.

Case

Studies

Thailand

- GDP/capita was triple during 1980–1996, the biomass energy consumption increased by 68%

- Increase renewable energy utilization was launched in 1992 aiming for the country to depend less on imported energy, which at present accounted for 7% of GDP.

Tanzania,

  • for 2kg (wet weight) per days installed that had a daily gas production of 290 L/d and 130 L/d (assuming that a Tanzanian household produces 1 kg of food leftovers and 1 kg of fruit and vegetable peelings)
  • 200 L of biogas (61% CH4) equivalent to a 45-min burning period.

Potential in Thimphu City

- has a population of around 80,000 citizens is estimatd to grow to 1, 62,000 by 2027 .

-daily waste produce of 47.3tons

- from which 7.3 tons (6622.45) is wet waste

data extracted from Annual Waste report 2016, Thimphu Thromdoe

Thesis objectives

  • To calculate the annual energy that can be harnessed from the waste produced in Thimphu.
  • undersatnd the methodeologies involving the WTE in relation to biomass

Methodology

Identification of Waste composition

Data collection in Thimphu

  • waste dumpings were measured in measure in five different stations of the city
  • Three house from each stations were measured for both their wet as well as dry waste
  • composition of the wet waste samples were checked everyday
  • pH and temperature of the waste and the outside environemnt were also noted

Set Up in AUW

Raw materials required:

  • Pre-prepared inoclumbe
  • food waste composition
  • cow manure

For optimal result :

  • an observation day count is30- 50

Set Up in AUW

sampling batches:

  • 11 sampling batches will be observed through out the process

Recipe for the samplings:

waste + inocolumb ratio

5% waste, 10% waste, 15% waste, 20 % waste

waste + inocolumb ratio + manure

5% (w):45% (I): 50%, 10% (w), 40% (I), 50 % (M)

and likewise...

  • the 11th sample will be 100 % inoculumb and will act as a control

Discussion

the nation's domestic LPG demands amounts to about 90% of the county's economical earnings (Tobgay. 2011)
