Lead Poisoning: Flint did not have proper corrosion treatments leading to the pipes breaking down and contaminating the water. The city began giving free filter trials to try to eliminate the problem.
The Problem
In 2015 the mayor called a state of emergency, and multiple state officials were criminally charged. The government gave the public health benefits because of the crisis. They replaced faucets, and gave free health screenings to children under 6 years of age.
Two full years after the problem arose, the water went back to the federal limit, however residents are still advised to use filters for drinking water.
Flint city officials have been working towards a 30-year contract with the Great Lakes Water Authority, who continues to refuse. This deal would ensure the people continuous safe drinking water until a long-term solution to the water crisis.
Here are some Non-profit organizations that helped with the water crisis in Flint.
