Junior was born with "water on the brain"

Junior was born with cerebral spinal fluid inside of his skull. He was only six months old when he received his first brain surgery. The after affects of this surgery caused Junior to suffer serious brain damage.

1st

Challenges

  • He struggles with a speech impediment which meant he often stuttered while speaking and had a lisp
  • Grew an extra ten teeth (which he got pulled out)
  • One eye is nearsighted and farsighted in the other
  • Very skinny with big hands and feet
  • He had seizures at least twice a week. Damaging his brain even more each time.

The Death of Oscar

Oscar is Junior's best friend/pet dog. Junior really depended on Oscar. He felt as if Oscar was "a better person than any human" (Alexie 9) he had ever known. One week, Oscar got really sick to the point that he was vomiting, had very bad diarrhea and had seizures. Unfortunately, Juniors parents couldn't afford to bring Oscar to the vet so Juniors dad took out his riffle and shot Oscar to his death.

Junior hits Mr. P with a book

Junior just received his geometry books in class. He opened it and saw his mother's name in the book, making it 30 years old. He realized how poor the school was and threw the book. It hit Mr. P on the nose, breaking it and suspending Junior.

Junior Decides to go to Reardan

Junior decides to go to Reardan

Mr. P comes to Junior’s house and they have a talk about hope. Mr. P advises Junior to leave the Rez or else he will be killed. Junior waits for his parents to come home and tells them that "white people" have the most hope. He later tells them that he wants to attend Reardan.

Junior tells Rowdy he's transferring to Reardan

Junior approaches Rowdy (his best friend) at the tribal school to deliver the news that he's leaving Wellpinit and transferring to Reardan. Rowdy didn't react well with this news. Therefore, Rowdy got mad and punched Junior in the face. Afterward, their friendship started to crumble.

Roger tells a racist joke

Junior’s first day of Reardan consisted of him getting stared at by everyone and his real name, Arnold Spirit getting exposed. A week later, Roger, who is a star basketball and football player on the senior team at Reardan tells Junior a joke involving Indians, African Americans, and buffalo. Junior felt like he was getting belittled therefore, he punched Roger in the face. Roger respected Junior from that point on.

The death of Junior's grandmother

Junior's grandma was walking home from a mini powwow at the community center when she got hit by a drunk driver. The paramedics were able to keep her alive until they reached the surgery room. She had died of major internal injuries.

Junior's restaurant experience

Junior, Penelope, Roger, and 15 other people ate at a Denny's after a school dance. Everybody orders pancakes, even Junior, even though he knows he won't be able to pay. Halfway through the meal, Junior goes to the bathroom to puke. Roger comes to check on him and finds out that he doesn’t have money to pay for the meal. As a result, Roger gives Junior a twenty dollar bill to pay for the meal.

Wellpinit plays Reardan

Rowdy steals the opening tip off and races down the court. Junior runs right beside him all the way to the rim. Rowdy and Junior jump up together as Rowdy tries to dunk. Junior blocks Rowdy and runs to his side of the court. Junior pump fakes and then drains a three. Reardan wins as Junior shuts down Rowdy and keeping him to four points

Junior's sister passes away

8th

Junior's sister has a party in Montana. Everyone gets drunk and Mary passes out in bed with her husband. Somebody tries to fry beans and sets the camper on fire, killing both Mary and her husband.

Rowdy and Junior play 1v1

9th

Junior sees Rowdy playing basketball by himself at the school court. Junior walks up and asks to play. Junior and Rowdy played until the street lamps lit up the court and nobody kept score.
