First Steps:

Let's look at rainsticks

1. Trace around the end of your tube onto a piece of brown paper (or construction paper).

2. Draw a circle that is two times bigger than your first circle (around that first circle) and then draw four or so spokes between the two circles.

3. Cut along the spokes.

4. Tape the spokes onto one end of your tube.

What you will need :

• A cardboard tube

• Aluminum foil

• Seeds, pebbles, small beads

• Tape/Glue

• Scissors

• Crayons or markers

- Paper

The Legend of the Rainstick

Next Steps...

Turn off the lights, get comfortable and enjoy this 'Rainstick' story

Cut a couple pieces of aluminum foil that are about one and half times the length of your tube and about 6 inches wide.

Then Crunch the aluminum foil pieces into long, thin, snake-like shapes. Then twist each one into a spring shape..

Before Foley Art, Rainsticks were created to imitate the sound of a rainfall.

Cultures all around the world use rainsticks as a musical instrument and a tool to persuade weather in times of drought.

Finally,

Make another cap from brown paper

(the same as the first three steps) and cap your tube.

Decorate your tube using tape, markers, crayons, stickers and/or string/yarn.

What's inside a Rainstick?

Next...

Put the aluminum foil springs into your tube.

Then, Pour approx. 1/2 cup seeds/beads into your tube.

On the worksheet make your best guesses as to the materials used for each sound

* We will then go through the actual materials used by Foley Artists *
