Ataxia

Cause: degeneration of cerbellum

Symptoms: similar to being drunk: stumbling, slurred speech, loss of coordination,

Treatment: varies from person to person; may include medication, speech therapy, and/or physical therapy

Tourette Syndrome

Tourette Syndrome

-hereditary

-causes 'tics', involuntary, repetive sounds or movements

-commonly exhibitted between ages of 6 and 15 but can be in 2 to 20 year-olds

Dystonia

-abnormal functioning in the basal ganglia

-results in involuntary muscle spasms which are either focal or general

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy

PSP is the loss of specific brain cells. Its cause is unknown, and it is usually fatal in 6-10 years. It results in the slowing of movements and the loss of control of eye movement, speech, walking, and balance. It can also cause cognitive and personality changes. There is no medication currently for PSP. It is also known as Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome.

-progressive, degenerative and fatal disease caused by the deterioration of certain nerve cells in the brain.

-symptoms: jerking; uncontrollable movements of the limbs, trunk, and face; progressive loss of mental abilities

-hereditary

-no cure for Huntington's disease. Treatments include antipsychotics, antidepressants, tranquilizers, mood-stabilizers or botox injections.

Multiple System Atrophy

Multiple System Atrophy

Symptoms include stiffness or rigidity; freezing or slowed movements; instability; loss of balance; loss of coordination; a significant fall in blood pressure when standing, causing dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting or blurred vision

It is fairly uncommon and affects many brain systems as the name implies.
