Mansa Musa was the first leader of the Mali empire to convert to the Islamic religion. During his reign, the empire experienced a peak age in trade, and Mansa Musa became the wealthiest known man. The fact that he was able to even embark on a hajj and leave Mali in the early 1320's is a testiment to his power and strong control.

Contestants will travel to Niani -- the capital of the ancient Mali empire. Founded by Sundiata. It was famous for its mining and agricultural advancements. It was well placed for defense and trade, and was the presumed birthplace and starting point of Mali emporer Mansa Musa.

1) arrive at the Niani ruins
2) find the gold mines around the city
3) get dirty and find some gold
4) prepare to travel to the next destination, all the way across the Sahara desert
When Mansa Musa went to Cairo, Egypt he surprised and intrested the Egyptians with his mass wealth of gold. The Egyptians used his generosity to aquire vast amounts of his wealth. In fact Mansa Musa gave so much money away he nearly destroyed the Egyptian economy. He used Cairo as a pit stop to replenish supplies, and he stayed here for 3 months.
Market in modern Cairo
In this challenge teams will:
An ancient mosque in Timbuktu
As with all hajjes, Mansa Musa's journey ended in Mecca, in modern Saudi Arabia. However, with his return he brought an Arabic architect, who he entrusted to build mosques and learning centers in Timbuktu. Some of these mosques can still be found today, and thanks to that architect Timbuktu became the center of learning in Mali.
In this activity, teams will:
1) locate and examine a mosque, or other ancient buildings
3) race to gather materials
4) build a model education center
3) have it judged by an Arabic Architect
