The Evolution Timeline of Pluto

Cassidy Deeken: Presentation

What has Pluto become overtime in our history?

Overtime Pluto has become more and more popular about it’s mystery. Ever since Pluto was discovered in 1930 people have been wondering if Pluto is a planet, or a dwarf planet. “The first evidence of Pluto is just one of a band of numerous Kuiper-belt objects that arrived with the discovery of 1992QB”(NPG). Pluto has been a huge influence, making people think and wonder about this tiny planet dwarf planet in space.

Pluto was like every other planet in our solar system.

Pluto was like every other planet in our solar system.

At first, Pluto was like every other planet in our solar system. “Clyde Tombaugh discovers Pluto while searching for ‘planet x’, predicted by Percival Lowell in the late nineteenth century, to explain an apparent anomaly in orbit of Uranus” (NPG). Pluto was discovered and labeled as a planet in our solar system. Overtime, scientists began to study this particular planet to learn more about it. ”Pluto’s surface is surprisingly young and geologically active”(NPG). Pluto’s surface is actually different than other planets, making it more interesting for scientists to discover.

The discovery of Pluto's moons.

The discovery of Pluto's moons.

Advancing through this discovery, moons around Pluto were found. “Discovering Pluto’s moon Charon allows astronomers to determine their masses”(NPG). After discovering that Pluto has a moon, the moon was named Charon, and more moons were later discovered. ”Two tiny moons are found around Pluto October 2005” (NPG). After the discovery of these two moons “In 2012 we analyzed the angular momentum properties of the Pluto system with its 5 moons, not knowing the total angular momentum in the system” (Potter).

Astronomers began to oppose Pluto for being a planet.

Astronomers began to oppose Pluto for being a planet.

Suddenly, astronomers began to oppose Pluto for being a planet. “The International Astronomical Union voted on an official definition of the word “planet” (SN). This caused Pluto to be demoted, taking it from a planet to a dwarf planet for its size. Pluto is a very small planet, which makes it be slightly gravitational pulled by its neighbor Neptune, making it collide with Neptune's orbital schedule. This also caused Pluto to be demoted because it doesn’t have its own orbit. Later on, New Horizons sent an image of Pluto on July 13th showing a ‘heart’ on Pluto’s surface.

Summary

In the end, Pluto has influenced people into what it is, making people think and wonder about this tiny planet dwarf planet in space. Pluto turned from a planet out in the middle of nowhere undiscovered, to a discovered dwarf planet. These discoveries made changes to Pluto that were good and bad, such as astronomers finding out Pluto has 5 moons. However, the bad side to this discovery is a possible collision with Pluto and Neptune, also Pluto’s demotion from a planet to a dwarf planet. Pluto may have changed its information over time, but our planet is still our planet. Pluto will always be welcomed by us, even if it’s not a planet.
