Earliest

Ancestors

One of the Cassowaries earliest ancestors is the Corthyraptor. The corythoraptor is a prestoric riatiet with a short deep skull that has a toothless jaw

The emu

Recent ancestors

the Emu has some very similar, and very different traits when compared to the cassowary. for example, the emu is a taller, lighter weighted bird than the cassowary.

Cassowaries are heavier, darker, smaller birds. they aso have blue and red wattles, unlike the Emu.

Adaptations and Evolutional history.

Adaptations

The Cassowary has developed many useful traits over the years. For example, they have long claws on each of their 3 toes. they can grow up to 5 inches, andare used for self defensive purposes. The Cassowary will often kick its predators, utilizing these claws. They also developed the ability to run at speeds up to 30 mph. They can even maintain this speed through dense forests. The evolutional history of ratites is not well known.

Evidence of evolution

Biogeography

Cassowaries are found in northern astralea, new guinea and the srounding islands.

Biogeography

Eggs and chicks of the cassowarie

Eggs

The cassowaries eggs are green wich comes from biliverdin witch is a common pigment found in eggshells.

Chicks

Embrology

The chicks have broad bands going down their backs that brakes up their body outline. So it makes it harder for predators the recoghize the chicks as prey.

DNA

The cassowaries are more closly realated to the south amrican tinamous witch is a quail like bird and is flieted. So the cassowaries are more closly related to a bird that can fly than other ratites like the ostrige and the emu.

simalarits to the other ratites and cassowaries

all the most common ratites kept in captivity like rheas, emus, ostriches and cassowaries share is their wings. Their wings have no use when it comes to flying

Our observation

  • the corythraptor and the cassowary have a large crest on there heads.

  • all the ratites cant fly.

  • only the osteric has two toes insted of three toes.
