Anglican

- originated from when King Henry VIII split from the Roman Catholic Church (1534)

- the king was denied an annulment by the pope, and he separated from it

- Baptists were established out of the Puritan-Separatists movement

The Southern colonies had very different aspects when it came to their religion

- Georgia was known for its religious tolerance and freedom

- It is referred to as the "melting pot" of religion because it contained and welcomed several different religious groups

- Religious strife occurred amongst the Anglicans, Puritans, Quakers, and Catholics

- Puritan took control of the colony briefly

- Quakers were some of the first settlers to reside in North Carolina

- South Carolina was known for religious freedom, especially when compared to North Carolina

- As the Baptist denomination tried to make an entrance, the "Anglican elite" responded with force

- Baptists preachers were imprisoned and physically attacked (in Virginia)

- Mobs would attack worship meetings and beating anyone who participated

- In the colony, it was separated because Virginia dissenters faced the worst persecution at the time

- Since the southern states were mainly Anglican, they were supported through taxation

- Other denominations were required to ask permission to form and got financial support through its members

- Colonists couldn't serve in the government unless they attended an Anglican church

- The colonies were mainly controlled by wealthy plantation owners
