Class of 2020

Anacortes School District

  • 2020–21 school year will likely have split or rotating schedules with Distance Learning, and continuous Learning 2.0, which will only be used when it is not safe for any large groups of students or staff to be in school together.

  • Face-to-face instruction is a priority as public health conditions allow.

Anacortes School Foundation awarded 99 scholarships totaling $230,000. Congratulations!

  • Curbside Pickup: Tuesday - Friday from 11am - 3pm. Check the library's website for details and instructions.

  • Book drops are open Tuesdays and Fridays from 11am to 4pm to allow for the required 72 hours quarantine of materials.

  • Summer Reading 2020 started at the Library this week!

  • Jeff Vogel will serve as Interim Director of the Library.

  • Municipal Court and the lobby of the Anacortes Police Department will reopens to the public.
  • Games may begin on City Ball Fields

  • Remote work is still encouraged, full in-person services will not resume until phase 4.

  • A committee of Anacortes Business Representatives reviewed and picked 15 recipients of the Small Business Stabilization Grant.

  • We are seeing permit applications continuing to increase. So far this year Single Family Residential Permits are 29 compared to 16 last year at this time.

  • Our Planning department is working on a resolution to bring before the City Council to adopt a guide for expanded restaurants and retail space on to the sidewalks on Fridays and Saturdays.

  • Anacortes Museum staff and the Museum Advisory Board are collaborating with local stakeholders on stewardship projects connected with Anacortes memorials.
  • Discussions include research assistance relating memorials,
  • Centennial planning for Causland Park in coordination with the City’s Parks Department, and;
  • Coordination of efforts with the Port of Anacortes for the monument at Seafarers’ Memorial Park.

The Anacortes Museum website now has a webpage dedicated to the Memorials in Anacortes, and staff look to continue interpretation efforts to honor those named at these community monuments.

  • The City is in contact with its partners at the state Department of Ecology.
  • The City has fully cooperated in all cleanup and maintenance and reporting activity and is working closely with the Department of Ecology to ensure all requirements are met.
  • The City cares for this important resource by maintaining trails, providing recreational opportunities and enhancing habitat.
  • The City is remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving the Anacortes Community Forest Lands for generations to come.

IMPACT

  • Finance staff is available 8am to 5pm, Monday - Friday by phone or email.

  • On the City’s Finance Department Web site you can sign up for business and dog licensing, sign up for utility billing autopay, or make a one-time payment.

  • The City’s next big project: the biennial budget. As we build the next biennial budget for fiscal years 2021 and 2022 we will work on how to set our budget expectations in these economically challenging times.

COVID-19 has deeply affected our workforce.

  • Skagit County's unemployment rate increased from 5.2% in March 2020 to 19.1% in April 2020.

  • The Skagit County Commissioners are allocating $1 million in federal CARES Act funding to be used for a small business grant program.

  • We expect to hear more information on eligibility requirements soon.

Community Update

The Anacortes Family Center is fueled by the generosity and compassion of THIS community.

Thank you!

During this crisis the Anacortes Family Center has:

  • remained at 100% occupancy,
  • successfully re-employed nearly all clients who lost their jobs,
  • hired three residents laid-off from their hospitality cleaning positions to perform extensive sanitation of AFC’s common areas,
  • extended its WiFi so that school-aged children living on AFC’s campus can complete their school work, and
  • created a rent-relief fund - so far over 20 rent relief grants have been used!

  • The Washington State Ferry system summer ferry vehicle reservations are now available.

  • Reduced ferry schedule will continue until further notice.

  • Customers can reserve a spot online for June 21 through September 26 on the Anacortes/San Juan Island route.
  • The Border is closed to non-essential travel until July 21st.

  • Commercial traffic and essential workers who cross the border for work, have continued.

  • Some immediate family members separated by the temporary COVID-19 travel restrictions can also cross the border.
