1945

The First Anime in History

  • The first anime ever was the anime film, Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors (Momotarō: Umi no Shinpei) directed by Mitsuyo Seo

1940

1948

The first anime studio was established

1948

  • The first anime studio was NIHON DOGA CO. ; however in 1956, the companny was purchased by Toei Co. In 1998, the studio changed their name to Toei Animation.

1958

The first anime film in color

  • Hakujaden (The Tale of the White Serpent) was the first anime film in color. Even though the movie had a similar atmosphere to Disney (musical and sidekicks), it is considered to be the first "anime" ever around the world.

The first anime series to be broadcast

  • Otogi Manga Calender was the first anime series to be broadcasted

  • Astro Boy premiered on New Year's Day and becomes the first popular anime.
  • Sally the Witch was the first magical girl anime series to be broadcasted

October 20, 1963

  • Tetsujin 28-go (Gigantor) is the first super robot series to be broadcasted.

1970-1971

  • Ashita no Joe (Tomorrow's Joe) is a boxing anime that aired on April 1, 1970. The show became iconic in Japan.
  • Lupin III anime series aired on October 24, 1971

  • Heidi, Girl of the Alps, became very successful internationally and in European countries

  • Mobile Suit Gundam, the first Real Robot anime series aired.

  • Urusei Yatsura a popular comedic manga was adapted into an anime

  • Captain Tsubasa became the first worldwide successful
  • sports anime. This anime paved way for future sport anime

  • Nausicaa of the Valley was released
  • Akira became the most expensive film productions costing $11 million at the time.

  • Kiki's Delivery Service becomes the top grossing film of that year earning ($40 million at box office.)
  • Dragonball series introduced the martial arts genre becoming influential in the Japanese Animation Industry.

1995-1997

  • Pokemon becomes the longest running anime in history with 806 episodes in Japan
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion becomes the most successful anime tv series of the ‘90s
  • Sailor Moon becomes the longest-running magical girl anime series

  • Princess Mononoke, became most expensive animated film at the time which cost $20 million dollars

2001-2007

  • Kanon makes erouge type anime more popular
  • Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann recieves h "best television production" and "best character design" awards from the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2008

2013-2017

  • A Silent Voice won Best Animation Award at the of the Year in the 26th Japan Movie Critics Award
  • Attack on Titan becomes a very successful series once released.
  • Your Name won many awards and was an Oscar Nominee

  • Attack on Titan becomes the most watch tv show in Winter season of America
  • Demon Slayer: Mugen Train passes Spirited Away in All-Time Record at Japanese box office (over $400 million)
