The American Revolutionary War Was Avoidable

Created by: Kiera Kiesling, Emily Brown, Daphne Backstrom, Lily Nicolay

Our Reasons

How The Conflict Began

Some reasons that the American Revolution were avoidable was because of the Colonists and the British. They both contributed to the American Revolution happening.

How the Colonists contributed

Colonists

The first way that the colonists contributed to the conflict was by hurting B

The colonists were innocent in some regard, but not always. They did help fan the flames to the American Revolution, and not in the way you may think.

One example is when the colonists would feather and tar the British tax collectors. This is shown in the Image Bank: Protests in Boston, 1770-1774. They caused many conflicts and made the British even angrier with them.

How the British contributed

British

During the Stamp Act, the government taxed colonists more for stamps on documented items, such as land titles, contracts, books, etc. This angered the colonists and they started to rebel against to government. As stated, "And the undoubted rights of Engishmen, that no taxes that should be imposed on them." (Stamp Act congress, a listing of rights 3rd) The colonists showed Britain that it was against the rules to tax to much. This could've been avoided if the government taxed less things for a smaller amount of money.

How It Was Avoidable

The Revolutionary War was a gruesome battle between the Colonists and the British. The colonists were tired of the way the British ruled them mostly because of the high taxes. This sparked a revolt against the British, each swing the colonists took at them the British swang harder. It went back and forth until war was declared for the colonists to finally be separated from the British. Many of these back and forth retaliations were extreme and unnecessary. There are faults in both the colonists and British and they were avoidable.

Colonists

Not following an unfair rule usually dosen't end well, and it started the Revolution for the colonists. As The colonists could have avoided the Revolution if they went along with the rules instead of rebelling against the British government. As stated, "John Malcolm, who was tarred and feathered twice." (Protests in Boston). This shows that the colonists also tourtured the British and prevoked the gonvernment.

British

We believe that the American Revolution could have been avoided.

First of all, Britain had lots and lots of debt, as displayed in the Image bank: 18th-century British debt graph. The debt let to the colonies being taxed greatly. If they were more smart about their money then they wouldn't have taxed the colonies, and a major cause of the revolution would have been avoided.

The second way that the American Revolution could have been avoided was if the Olive Branch Petition was allowed to pass. The colonists tried to solve things peacefully, but the British declined. The Olive Branch Petition is shown in the source "Second Continental Congress, appeal to the British king to resolve difference without war, 'Olive Branch Petition to King George III,' Journals of the Continental Congress-Petition to the King, (excerpts), July 5, 1775."

The third way that the American Revolution could have been avoided is if the British allowed for the colonies to have the rights they asked for. This is shown in the "Stamp Act Congress, a listing of rights, 'Declaration of the Congress Held at New York,' October 19, 1765". The colonists agreed on a set of rights that all colonists should have. The British did not allow it, and barely even acknowledge it. It could have been avoided if they just allowed them to have the rights that they discussed and all agreed on.
