Safari Seat

By: Rhea Shetty

The Challenge

4.8 million people are currently living in poverty in cambodia. And about 15 percent of those people are disabled. Most of these people rely on argriculture on their income, but 12 percent of people in poverty are landless. The people with disabilities are due to certain circumstances such as:

  • Road incidents
  • Accidents
  • Polio
  • Storkes

Because of their disabilities they are limited from doing normal activities and oppurtunites in their lives.

How Does It Affect People?

It affects many people, especially women. As they do not have the access to many things such as

  • Education
  • Employment
  • Property rights

There are many limitations for people with disabilities two of them include

  • Education
  • Discrimination

How Does It Affect People?

Education -

Many school exclude learners with disabilities. The government has tried to support this problem but they have the lack of money to continue, as they need to take care of many things that their families cannot afford to do such as

  • Wheelchairs
  • Uniforms
  • Study Materials
  • Other expenses

Discrimination

In Cambodia there are a lot of people who are religious and have many beliefs, therefore many religious Cambodian people think that people with disabilities have done something bad in their past life and that's why they are disabled in thier present life. People with disabilities are considered less important in the society and people have negative perspectives towards them.

The Innovation

The Safari Seat

The Safari Seat a low costing, all-terrain wheelchair. It is designed for people living in developing countries. The Safari Seat allows people with disabilities to have independent lives. Janna Deeble the person who created the Safari Seat, he grew Kenya. He was inspired to create the Safari Seat after meeting a Samburu man, who was disabled since birth by polio. Janna had an accident that made him disabled ofr 3 months, during this time he realized how hard it was for his friend to do normal activities. Janna then returned back to Kenya in 2015 to start his desgin. The wheelchair mimics a car supspension, so that it remains on the ground.

It can help overcome the problem as the Safari seat allows poor people with disabilties to have access to wheelchairs. In Cambodia there are about 2 million people who are in need of wheelchairs, a group called Uji designed a wheelchair that could be easily made by only using bicycle parts.

Conclusion

Conclusion

The problem in Cambodia is that there are a lot of poeple living in poverty and are disabled, so they have less access to medical car as they cannot afford to do so. So the techonological innovation 'The Safari Seat' has overcomed this problem by letting people with disabilities to have access to wheelchair without having to worry about money as this innovation can be easliy repaired as it is made by bicycle parts, this is good as it doesn't need fancy resources that cannot be found easliy. So overall I think that technological innovations are good solutions for global issues because they have tried other options that are not technological like they tried creating more jobs but this did not work as most of the people that were poor and were disabled did not have access to education, thus they did not have the knowledge of many this so this eventually did not work as well as a technological solution.

Benefits

Some benefits are

  • The safari seat is a wheelchair speciafically designed for people living in developing countries like Cambodia and for people living in poverty who are also disabled. This wheelchair that is made is a low-costing, and is open-source meaning that it is freely avaliable for the people in need of it.
  • The safari seat can be made in a normal workshop using only bicycle parts. This makes the wheelcahir easily repairable.

Benefits

Limitations

Some limitations are

  • the problem with using bicycle parts to repair the wheelchair is that not all families living in poverty many have access to a bicycle nearby which can eventually become very difficult for the families ad they would not have the essential parts to repair the safari seat
  • But they have solved this by making more workshops nearby so that they can access it and these workshops are also open source
  • A problem with this wheelchair is that if the people that are disabled are younger people like for example around the age of 7, this wheelchair cannot be used by the children as to use it you have to pull a lever on the sides of the wheelchair which can be difficult for the children to do as they may not be strong enough.
