Main Characters and Setting

Beginning

In the beginning of the book Max and Zena are trying to hide from the Nazi's with their dad. One night, Max heard Aunt Hannah talking to Papa and she wanted all of them to leave for America but he refused. After that she left by herself. The next day when they were hiding they were found by a Nazi soldier and taken to the Ghetto. The Ghetto was where the Nazi's kept Jews, it was surrounded by guards and barbed wire fence. Max and Zena were together but their dad was separated from them. When they were walking around the Ghetto they found a bush with berries on it and they tried grabbing them because they were so hungry. They couldn't reach them so Max squeezed though an opening in the fence but when doing so a guard saw them and hit Max in the head with his rifle.

Beginning

Middle

In the middle of the story after the guard hit Max, he tried to take Max, but Zena jumped out of a bush which caused the guard to drop his rifle. When the rifle hit the ground it shot the guard in the foot. Max and Zena then started running for the forest and eventually ended up at a farm. This is where they saw a group of Nazi's at the barn looking for a group of people who had just blown up a Nazi train. Max and Zena then hide so they wouldn't see them, but while they were hidden they fell asleep. When they woke up the owner of the farm was staring at them. He told them they needed to hide in the barn because the Nazi's were coming back. When they were hiding in the barn they started hearing loud trucks and cars which meant the Nazi's were there. Then a man with a mean looking dog came to the front of the barn and right before the man sent his dog to search, the farmer told them they wouldn't be hiding in there. Luckily they listened to him and didn't search and went to the corn fields. When the Nazi's left barn, the farmer went in and cut a floor board open, where there were people hiding. The people came out and Max recognized one of them, it turn out to be Hannah, his Aunt. She told them she was a part of a secret group that fights back against the Nazi's called the partisans, which are the ones who blew the train up. Then they all started heading back to the partisans camp which was 10 miles away. When they got back to the camp Zena was crying because her toe was ripped open so they cut the ends of her boots open. When they were were fixing Zena's shoe they started hearing buzzing which kept getting louder and louder. Then they realized it was Nazi bomber's and they were bombing the forest to kill all the partisan's.

End

In the end of the story after the bombings Max fell into a ditch and and a burning tree fell over the ditch. Max was stuck in the ditch, but he saw a shard rock and began to dig through the dirt. He was digging for a couple of hours and finally made a big enough space to crawl out of the ditch. When he was out of the ditch he heard machine gun fire and figured that the Nazi's were surrounding the forest. He then began looking for Zena and Hannah, but then he saw two Nazi soldiers in front of him. He then yelled and one of the partisans came and shot one of the soldiers. When he shot the other Nazi his pistol hit the ground and fired which hit Max on the side of his body. Max fell to the ground in pain then Hannah and Zena came running over to him. They then took Max back to the camp to look at his wound, but one of the partisan watchmen saw a man in the distance. The man turned out to be Max and Zena's dad and he ran over and hugged them. He then told them about how he escaped from the Ghetto. Later they took Max to a doctor to take the bullet out of his side. A couple years later Max, Zena, and their dad went to America together, but Hannah stayed in Germany because she married someone in the partisan group and wanted to build a new community. The End.

Problem

The problem in the story is that Adolf Hitler and his Nazi army are killing all Jewish people and it is very hard to stop them. They would search for Jewish people and take them to places like the Ghetto, where they would torture them and eventually kill them. Max and his family were Jewish so they were trying to hide from the Nazi's.

Solution

The solution is that Max and his family went through many obstacles to escape from the Nazi's. They were successful in doing so by hiding and later they all move to America where they were safe. In addition, Britain and America defeat Germany in WWII.

Problem and Solution

Main idea

The main idea of the book is that the Nazi's wanted to kill all Jewish people and it was very difficult for Jewish people to avoid being killed. The Nazi's were a very bad group of men under the control of Adolf Hitler and they would stop at nothing to torture and kill any Jewish people they could find. Max, Zena and Papa were all Jewish and went through a lot trying to hide from and escape the Nazi's.

I rate this book a 5/5 stars because I like to read about war and adventure. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure, action and war.
