The Disaster

- A chain reaction of events resulted in a massive eruption of the volcano.

- The day started with a 5.1 magnitude earthquake at 8:32 AM on May 18, 1980.

- This Resulted in the largest debris avalanch in recorded history

- This allowed for the mountain to erupt spewing ash high into the air

This event was a chain reaction of mutiple natural disasters that created the devastation to the surrounding population and environment.

Human Impact

Human Impact

- While the event mostly affected the enviroment there were other impacts on the population as well.

- The death toll of this disaster was 57. One thing that contributed to this death toll was that shortly before the eruption the area was being evacuated but some refused to leave.

Environmental Devastation

This disaster was devastating to the surounding environment.

- An area of approximately 210 square miles of forest was reduced to ash

- The earthquake caused the entire north face of the summit to slide down the mountain resulting in the biggest landslide on record.

- The debris was liquified in the eruption of the volcano and began speeding down the mountain at speeds upward of 100 mph.

- Ash from the eruption drifted the globe for days following the explosion.

- Thousands of animals and millions of fish died during the event.
