Dr. Manette

Dickens uses Dr. Manette to portray a father-like man who has overcome his past and pursued a new life with love while saving Charles Darnay's life.

Purpose

Purpose

Archetype

Archetype

Father figure- protects everyone and helps with anyone else's needs.

Dr. Manette is a father figure because he cares for Lucie and would do anything to protect her. As well as when Charles Darnay went to prison and he did everything in his power to help him. This also shows how forgiving he is because even after fin ding out Charles family are the ones that put him in prison he still tries to set Charles free.

How

How

Portrayed through Dr. Manette using his selflessness and courtesy.

"There is no patriot in Paris-in Paris? In France, who knowing me to have been a prisoner of the Bastille, would touch me, except to embrace me or carry me in triumph." (Book 3, Chapter 2, Page 321)

1

Dr.Manette says this while in Pairs. This evidence helps to show that being in prison and leaving helped him gain wisdom and gave him experience in the same setting Darnay is now in. After becoming a tributry in Paris, he is now able to go in and out of La Force to help communicatoion between Lucice and Darnay until his trial, where he is later realeased.

"He was a French gentelman; a man or great acquirement- a doctor" (Book 1, Chapter 4, Page 28)

2

The adjectives used in this quote help show Manettes father archetype. The descriptive words show that he is a qualified person " a doctor" and that he is also qualified to be a father to Lucie "gentelman." He sets a good example for Lucie and everyone else he comes into contact with by having the atributes.

"Not that ,sir! Let that be! I adjured you, do you not recall that!" (Book 2, Chapter 7, Page 133)

3

This is Manette's respones to Darnay when he admitted his feelings for Lucie. Like most typical fatehrs, Manette is very protective of Lucie. In order to protect her Manette declines Darnay because he is scared at the thought of losing his little girl. Later, once Mantte realizes it's for the best, he allows Darnay to enter into their lives.

"He is of a studious habit, and usually energetic; he applies himself with great adour to the aquisition of professional knowledge, to the conducting of experiments, to many things." (Book 2, Chapter 19, Page 248)

4

While spreaking to Dr. Manette Mr.Lorry uses this as a description of Dr. Manette. This is also a reference to another character that also shares the father like or caring gentelman archetype.

Static or Dynamic

Manette is more of a static character. He is only of the main character in the novel, but as far as personality goes he doesn't change.

Static or Dynamic

1

"He was so deeply pale....that no vestige ot color was to be seen on his face." (Book 2, Chapter 18, Page 237)

After Manette gives Lucie to Darnay for their honeymoon, he becomes effected by his memories in prison, which is refered to as his "relapse." This part of his life is the only real change Manette goes through, since Lucie, and it isn't a poermantet change which helps support that Manette is a static character.

2

"Mr. Lorry hacked the bench to peiced, while Miss.Pross held the candle as id she were asisting a murder." (Book 2, Chapter 19, Page 251)

This supports my first quote in Manettes realaps because Mr.Lorry and Miss.Pross doing this esentially saves Dr.Manette from continuing down this path of bad memories. This gesture helps put a stop to the relaps and allows Dr. Manette to go back to his static yet caring life.

3

"...room for the Bastille prisoner in front there! Save the prisoner Evermond at La Force!" (Book 3, Chapter 2, Page 324)

The mob in the court room chants this shortly after Manette decides he should goes back into the prison and order Darnay to be freed. This qoute helps show hwo quickly the mob changed to show the support for him. Throughout the book he seemd to be influencial in everything he does and like he alwys has the right soulution. Since he is one of the oldest characters in the book he seems to be the one with the most wisdom which becomes very influencial.

Connection

Connection

Dr. Manette's character reminds me of Martin Luther King Jr. in many different aspects. For one, Martin Luther was afraid to speak out on his veiw of segregation because fear of arrestment, but in the end he built up courage and ended up giving many speeches and began movements. This is simular to Dr.Manette with his situation of helping Darnay. He was scared to go back tpo the prison, but he decides to do it because he knows it will have a better outcome.

Theme

Dr.Manette represents the theme of "love is greater than hate." Dr.Manette was imprisoned for 18 years by the Evermonde brothers. Later we find out that Charels Darnay, his son-in-law, is family of these brothers. Instead of holding this against Darnay he saves him from La Force prision. This act shows that "love is greater than hate" because since Darnay is apart of his family he loves him and doesn't hold bad feelings towards him for what his uncle and dad did.
